Sunday River 2-28-04

We headed up to the River with my oldest son, her daughter and son in law. We had passes, so all could ski for free. Can't quite understand why one of my sons would bag this trip, no charge......

Anyways, it promised to be a great day, temps heading into the upper thirties. We could dress a littl lighter and really give this mountain all we wanted to. Problem is, on a day like this, there are going to be crowds. We got there there for opening, and skiied our favorite trails before they were turned to crud. Lazy River, Rogue Angel, Excalibur and OZ were all well enjoyed before we headed back to the base lodge to attack the tray of lasagna we cooked up.

After that we headed to White Heat and Shock Wave. There was some bare coverage, and having negotiated our way down, we decided to go elsewhere. We "found" trails we have never or seldom done at the River this day. We did Bim's Whim and the goat path. Even with the crowds, our exploring found many trails that we had all to ourselves, or shared with a few folks. The River is a big spread out place, with 8 mountain tops, and runs for everyone in the family. We had a great time, and having the kids along made it all the better.

The mountain was well groomed in the morning, but come about 3:00 or so the heavy use areas had pulverized snow over hard scraped ice. Still, there was plenty of good skiing to be had, just stay away from the beginner's area and the intersections of major trails.

Today, they had a boarder-x qualifing match or something going on. We were able to watch these talented, fearless kids do some amazing things. I tell you, you have to be young and truly believe yourself to be indestructable to do some of these things. I am sure they had many a spill learning to do some of these things. But they were amazing to watch!

While we were skiing, we came upon Black Hole, the single steepest run on Sunday River. (Although it is steeper than White Heat, it is not very long, thus White Heat is the steepest sustained run). My wife and her daughter continued on by it on Airglow. My son and son in law were sitting at the top of it, looking over the precipice

, as it were, when I arrived. I informed them that the "little girls" were going down Airglow, and asked them which way they were going.

With that, they were up and running and we all went "over the edge". Surprisingly, the trail was fairly nice, and we met the "little girls" at the lift.

Just 'cause "the little boys" had to work there testosterone out and show each other up....We just had a mother/daughter time together.

It's really nice to have these get together's now that she's older and appreciates our times together.
