Hunter mountain (Catskills) 11-18-06

Date(s) Hiked: 11/18/2006

Trails(s) Hiked: Becker Hollow

Total Distance: about 4.5 RT

Difficulty: steep and short (hardish easy?)

Conditions: Cloudy, light snow

Special Required Equipment: nothing

Trip Report:

Ah, my first visit to the Catskills. I chose Becker Hollow trail for no particular reason (there are three; one is Spruceton trail I don’t know the other name). It is the steepest and shortest part up hunter. It climbs a rather beefy 2220 feet in 2.08 miles. The trail was nice and wide, but at the higher altitudes the footing was pretty abysmal, especially coming down. Views were obscured by a 3500 or so foot cloud line (summit is 4040 or thereabouts). The summit is perfectly flat and stretches for quite a way. On the top stands supposedly the highest elevated active fire tower in the northeast (it’s a tall tower too). There was about an inch of snow all around, small amount of rime too.

One minor point of interest on Hunter mountain is that apparently on either the trail I took or the other trail with the east side approach Monica Lewinski first told someone about her under the desk romance with Bill Clinton! Interesting!

Great to read you are all over the Northeast. I've never hiked the Catskills. Let me think of Monica's story again.
