Jay, Big Jay 11-26-06

Date(s) Hiked: 11/26/06

Trails(s) Hiked: Long Trail, Herd Path

Total Distance: ~5.2

Difficulty: Moderate

Conditions: Windy at the top, mud was frozen (handy!)

Special Required Equipment: nothing really..

Trip Report:

Another NEHH bagging trip. Jay peak and Big Jay are waaaaay up there, only a few miles from francophone land! The views were utterly fantastic, I would go as far as to say they are the best I have seen in VT. It was a nice short hike too especially for two peaks! The “bushwhack” to Big jay was more a joyous easy hike along a very nicely cleared path! Loved this hike, Check out my pictures they are worth it. I did see some skiers for those wondering (they were on some of the lower peak trials, not on the big peak).

More trip report and pictures (pictures really are nice this time I swear!)

Hey - slow down, will ya! You're making my NE100 quest look bad...

What's your count at this point?

The link to the map from your TR page doesn't work for me. I get a 404.

Only 2:50 to hike and about, what, 8 or 9 total hours of driving? Heh-heh.

ha! i thought the trail routing on the usgs topo didn't look right. your map plot confirmed my suspicion as the long trail doesn't enter the ski trail until just a short ways up vermonter from my recollection. if you thought the views from jay were great, check out the hikes around willoughby such as pisgah, hor, and wheelock. i never thought much of the views from jay, they are just okay in my book. vermont doesn't have many mountains with 'great' views though.

Hmmm, well it is true I have never been up those peaks... I have seen willoughby/pisgah pictures (here I think) and they were pretty awesome. I think the way the sun lit of the valley fog to the SE and the unusual mountains in Quebec made the views in this trip especially nice.

Ya I think I recall seeing where the old trail took off and went over to the other summit near the ski trails, it looks like the LT was just rerouted and the maps are old.
