Mount Southington, Southington, CT whopping 425ft vertical drop - 3/21/2004 afternoon

Last weekend for Southington. In fact, they actually were closed for the season but opened up again after the snow last week. Today was their last hurrah for the season.
Knowing the conditions wouldn't be that great with the rain last night, we didn't hurry out the door this morning. We had the last pair of free passes from my father-in-law to use -- had we not had them, we would not have skiied today. It definitely wasn't worth the normal price of admission. Before we got there, it started to snow in Torrington, but there was a heavy downpour in Bristol/Southington. By the time we got there after running some errands (around noon), the sun was peeking out from the clouds, but the damage was already done. The snow was saturated; slushy all over, with some patches of ice and puddles. Trails were getting narrower and there were a few thin spots in the trails. Because of the conditions, though, there were no crowds. Most of the people who were there were hanging around Dom's Way, Stardust and Liftline. But we had Steeplechase, Thunderbolt, Avalanche and Boomerang mostly to ourselves. It was fun while the sun was out; cold when it wasn't (very windy). The skiing overall was less than desirable with the sudden slow downs that occur when skiing in this kind of snow... but it was still better than staying home doing housework/homework. For the last run of the season, it was bittersweet...but December will be here before you know it!

Pain is temporary. It may last a minute, or an hour, or a day, or a year, but eventually it will subside and something else will take its place. If I quit, however, it lasts forever. ~ Lance Armstrong
