JAFFREY - A Maine hiker who climbed Mount Monadnock early this morning was found unconscious a half hour from the summit today and died despite fellow hikers' attempts to revive him.

The man was identified this morning as Thomas Plummer, 59, of North Berwick, Maine.

The early morning conditions made it impossible to send rescuers up until around 7:30 a.m. today. Rescue workers were in the process of bringing Plummer's body down the mountain this morning.

It is now apparent that the man died of a heart attack, and not a slip. However this should be a reminder to stay safe on those trails!

RIP

Marc, I saw a reference to the fact he may have died of a heart attack on VFTT but I did not see anything that ruled out him hitting his head or neck as he fell. Is there another report (a medical opinion by an MD) that has detemined he had a heart attack. A severe stroke would have looked similar too (also not really hiking related)

As of last night all I saw was cause unknown but he had no outward signs of blood loss of other trauma.

Still good to be extra careful these days as a slip n ice currently will have you falling on hard ice or off trail a little bit onto rocks. In a winter with a lot of snow, usually if you slip you land in unpacked snow, maybe up to your thigh or a face plant in powder but a softer landing.
