Snowbird 02/26/07

Weather: Bluebird sky
Conditions: Sick

Report: Couple of new experiences today; we checked out Snowbird on a sunny day, last year there were whiteout conditions. My first time on powder skis. And my first face shot! Snowbird recieved 26" over the weekend and then another 16" overnight. I figured this was good time to demo some powder skis. I saw that Backcountry.com had a good deal on K2 Apache Chiefs so I decided to demo before I buy. First run was down the Peruvian Gulch area, had plenty of powder, but I wasn't used to skiing on skis this fat and the powder was a bit choppy. Got about 500 feet before I got stuck in the snow! By the time we got to the base, by legs were hurting. I was trying to brake too much, not enough confidence. Took the lift up again and this time the new tunnel to Mineral Basin was open. We took that, pretty cool, and for the first time really saw Mineral Basin, what a sight!

This is where I experience my first ever face shot. We traversed across the Basin, found a nice strip of untouched pow and went down. As I was going, the snow was about mid thigh. As I picked up speed, the snow came up to my crotch, and then my waist, and next I see my chest all covered with snow, and then, I feel my face getting sprayed. What a feeling, I had a grin on my face all the way down on this run! W did a few more runs here and then V wanted to do lunch. We took the wrong lift up and got stuck going into the Basin again. Back up to the right lift over the top of the mountain and going back, we did the Cirque. When V saw the steepness of this trail, I thought her eye were going to pop out of her head. I talked her into going down it and she later reports that she thought it was a great run! By the time we got down to the bottom, we both realized our legs were killing us, I had decided to purchse the Chiefs at Backcountry, so we called it a day about 1:30. We didn't get that many runs in, but what we got was great and one hell of a workout. Another 1 1/2 feet of snow forcast for Wednesday and then another major storm moving in for Thursday, so we figured it would be a good idea to save our legs. Here's some pics I'll post more later:

There's a skier in this pic, can you see him?:

NICE!. The place is addicting. And now I'm sure I'm going back soon, 3rd week in March might be good.

First Face Shot?

Yeah, he got his 1st Face Shot. He didn't mention it was because he finally had enough POWDER to fall on his face in.

Hope you get mo POW on your trip. When you return, I left this weeks POW in the driveway for you to clear out! Enjoy!

You gotz the Brodie sign as a sig? Went there long ago, once. No more Patties day

Was at Butternut this past weekend with the Grandkids and club for a race. Excellent conditions, but never realized it was so SMALL! Even the kids managed to ski nearly the entire mountain.
