Ski Sundown - 3/21/2007 (night)

Date(s) Skied: Wednesday, 3/21/2007, 7:10 pm - 10:05 pm

Resort or Ski Area: Ski Sundown, New Hartford, CT

Conditions: Hard bumps, LSGR, hard pack. Temps in the low 30's, calm, partly cloudy.

Trip Report: Clicked in around a bit after 7 pm with some faint daylight to spare. Since it was still a bit light out I decided to scope out the little tree shot Brian and I hiked last summer. There were some tracks in there and the surface was very skiable. A log or two here and there, but totally navigable. Due to the fading light and lack of eye protection I took it easy in there, but at least I can say I've finally hit one of the little Sundown glades. I'd like to hit the mountain one afternoon next week and if they still have any cover, I'll explore a bit more.

The rest of the night was spent on...you guessed it...Nor'easter. The bumps were similar to last week and rather small despite last Friday's natural snowfall. Unfortunately, the temps barely reaching 40 today did little to soften them up. Still edgeable, but very firm with some LSGR sprinkled on the tops. Kind of skied like the bumps we had in late January. Tons of cover and no bare spots on Nor'easter at all. In fact the entire mountain is well covered, except for a few brown spots poking through near the base. The summit stockpile is smaller, but still is probably a 6 foot tall broad pile. The mountain has plenty of snow and my guess is hiking will be an option long after the lifts stop spinning. I'm placing my money on April 1, but we'll see. I'll likely go on some hiking missions in April.

Logged 20 runs tonight. Kept an aggressive line mostly despite the hard and fast bumps. Had a mini Ah-ha! moment making some quick rotary power turns by keeping the skis basically flat in a few areas where the line was irregular and tight. More good bump practice. What happened to my Wed. night crew...?

Life's too short for warm up runs.

Here are some pics. Sorry for the crappy resolution. I didn't have my camera on me so I took these with my phone, but you get the idea...

I was coaching the future stars of the Pomerpaug HS lacrosse team. Hopefully we will have a Monday afternoon crew next week.

Paul, how's the leg treating you?

Greg, would you say the pitch on that glade looks about accurate? I know sometimes the camera plays tricks on the eye when judging pitch.

Yeah - pitch is a hard thing to capture in a 2D representation like a photo. It's the same pitch as Nor'easter cuz it's, well, right next to it!
