Ski Sundown - 3/26/2007

Date(s) Skied: Monday, 3/26/2007, 1:20 - 5:40 pm

Resort or Ski Area: Ski Sundown, New Hartford, CT

Conditions: Awesome spring bumps, slush, Temps in the high 40's, Mostly cloudy, some peaks of sun, late rainshower, some rumbles of thunder to the north.

Trip Report: The weathermen can never get it right. Today's forecast on Friday was for sunny skies and temps in the mid 50's. Perfect for bumping it up. This morning, the forecast called for 70% chance of showers this afternoon. I watched the radar all morning and it looked like the heaviest rain was staying north of CT. With the potential for this to be Sundown's last day, it was a go, regardless of the weather.

Met powhunter from the MogulSkiing.net forum in the base lodge. We agreed to meet up on the hill. Took a few runs to find sweet spring bumps. Pretty slushy and slow, but very forgiving. Met up with powhunter and skied with him on all but my final run. Real good bumper with a nice tight and upright stance. We tore up mostly the same line all day and by mid afternoon had carved out a truly sweet line right down the middle. The top section skied great with a sweet line into lower Nor'easter with a nice short line that dropped off the back of one big bump. The middle line wavered around, but a nice string of bumps could again be had towards the bottom.

The bumps are truly sweet right now and today was my best Sundown bump day of the season. Skiing in the daylight was a nice change and the bumps are prime. A few dirty troughs showing up and we noticed a lot of melting and thin spots expanding today elsewhere on the moutain. We spoke with a woman in the cafe that indicated they will close tomorrow through Thursday with a possible reopening on Friday. I really hope so. I want to get one more lift-serviced night on those bumps. The rain held off on all but my second to last run with powhunter. My solo final run was dry. Rumbles of thunder could be heard in the dark sky north of us. The weather held out perfectly and we probably skied 25+ runs given the fast pace we kept during the 4+ hour visit. AWESOME bump day!

Got some pics and vid that I'll put up later. Never saw Grassi21 today who was supposed to be there today...

Sounds good, sorry I backed out. Unfortunately there were too many reasons for me not to go... I'm glad you were able to meet up with powhunter.

Not sure how I missed you. I hit Nor Easter before you arrived but I was sure I would see you from the lift at one point. Had a rough lax game the day before and couldn't handle the bumps. I spent most of my time on Canyon and Stinger.

2:30 which is what's weird. As I said in my PM, I thought I would at least see you riding or from the lift. Would you say that there were more than a dozen people there today? Fun time. Stinger is going to be worth the hike.

Definitely very quiet today which was nice in that nobody was on the trails and no lift lines, but in a sense sucks as that's why they're closing tomorrow. I really, really hope they reopen Friday. The bumps are that good right now. Not sure what will happen this week to the surface though. I suspect Sunday will be it and indeed the mountain will be worth hiking after the lifts stop spinning. I would hike laps on Nor'easter as it is right now. Just awesome today.

Top to bottom bumps on Stinger would rule it!

Probably ain't gonna happen though. That park is their bread and butter.
