Ski Saddleback 4-7-07

Area skied: Saddleback Maine.

Date skied: April 7th, 2007 from 9:00am - 3:45pm (last chair besides ski patrol) No lunch break.

Surface conditions: packed powder, loose powder, powder in the glades.

Weather: very cold, 21F at 9:00am and 26F at 4:00pm. Cloudy with constant flurries.

Warren and I started out the day with a run down the corduroy on Green Weaver. I skied onto the Kenebago T-bar and took the long traverse to Muleskinner.

Muleskinner was perfectly covered with powder moguls and some loose powder that required quick turns and had me winded at the bottom, but happy.

I meet up with Warren and we skied Peachy's Peril to Thrombosis Glade which still had untracked lines to be skied.

I talked Warren into riding the Kenebago T-bar and we skied the tight Intimidator Glades from top to bottom. Cover was great with pole plants sinking 1/2 - 3/4 deep.

We skied Muleskinner together and Warren disliked all the poling on Dazzler, but did good on Muleskinner. We skied Supervisor and the headwall was windblown and had unedgable ice. The three people ahead of us wiped out as did Warren. I cheated and skied through the tree's to get to the trail.

Supervisor had large well formed bumps and is quite steep and my pace was to ski 20-30 yards, wait for Warren and continue, but we all have to learn to ski steeps, so it's all good.

Tight line had a bare windblown headwall and we made it down very gingerly, and ducked into Warden's Worry which was thin with alot of stumps, roots, rocks, etc.

We skied Gray Ghost to Golden Smelt which is my favorite trail with nice soft moguls and a bowl type layout to the trail.

We took a run down Gray Ghost to Parmachenee (tons of powder and small moguls) and did Gray Ghost/Golden smelt as a last run at 3:45pm

All in all a great snow day with perfect mid-winter conditions and no crowds at all, and lots of runs, vertical for a $40 lift ticket.

Tomorrow, Sugarloaf.

I was here all day on sat as well. saddleback was the obvious choice because it was barely tracked in the woods and steeper trails in the morning. this was one of the best days of the year for me. i only left the upper t to rest my legs on the chair. did you notice that the snow fell dry all the way to the base? they reorted 41 inches that week and i totally believe that, because in spots the snow was crazy deep! the kind of stuff where you can just lift your tips up and go for the ride. to ski muleskinner like that (no concern for obstacles and deep loose powder) is amazing. IMO saddleback has the elevation (2450 base) and lack of people to make it an obvious choice after late storm like this.

Both good components to an awesome powder day, especially the lack of people. I will take a substantially fewer number of people over a few extra inches any day.
