Moriah & Shelburne Moriah on Stony Brook, Carter Moriah, Kenduskeag & Shelburne Trail

Trails(s) Hiked: Stony Brook, Carter Moriah, Kenduskeag, Shelburne Trails -

Total Distance: 13.1 miles 3900 feet elevation gain

Difficulty: Fairly difficult considering conditions

Conditions: Stony Brook in good shape, crossing were okay, a little high but we were able to cross near or at the normal spots. Carter-Moriah trail in good shape, a few patches of snow but nothing requiring traction or snowshoes. Moriah Summit okay but a little snow at bottom of ledge. Kenduskeag had more snow and several more blowdowns, occassionly requiring you to go off trail for a short side trip. Garry & Mike E used snowshoes for a little bit (100 yards maybe) but we then came to bare ground in a part of the trail doing a brook imitation. After that conditions varied from ground, rock, snow & BSM, (that's boot sucking mud). Getting to Shelburne Moriah we all went in almost to the boot top. Going down to Shelburne Trail, the Kenduskeag is steep in a few spots, several PUD's & a couple of nice domes with low (at most 2 ft. high) growth offering still more views. Shelburne trail had some snow below 3,000 feet & one mud hole that I went into just below the knee! (I'm 6' tall) Last couple of miles back to the car is on a logging road with recent logging activity

Special Required Equipment: Suncreen, sunglasses, water, maybe a wind-shirt & bug spray

Trip Report: On a holiday weekend that had people parkied along Franconia Notch Parkway, we saw nine people, two in the first 1/2 mile, two coming down from Imp & two groups (2 & 3 people) between Moriah & Shelburne Moriah. On holiday weekends this is a great trip if you want great views & relative solitude. This was a warm day but cooler than Friday's trip to Crawford Dome.

Shelburne Moriah is on the horizon for me -- nice ol' NHHH (NH 100 highest) peak

DEET & Snowshoes on the same trip.... isn't that a sign of the apocalypse?

No not the apocalypse, even it it was a sign, I'm not bright enough to read it! While my friends used the DEET & snowshoes, I opted not to, the snowshoes weren't a big deal, a couple of times I wish I had stopped & put on some DEET though.
