Jiminy Peak - 12/27/2004

Resort or Ski Area: Jiminy Peak, Hancock, Massachusetts

Conditions: Manmade packed powder, hardpack, some LGR. High temps in the teens, some wind, mostly cloudy with flurries.

Trip Report: We made the executive decision to hit Jiminy instead of Hunter today; mostly because we got a late start and felt Jiminy would be less crowded. The crowd today was your typical holiday one with many beginner skiers, but the wait at the six never passed 5 minutes allowing for another decent day of vert at Jiminy.

We started on Outback (new summit trail), West Way, Grand Slam. I wasn't impressed with Outback. It started out pretty fun winding around the back of the summit, but it then just died. Flat and slow is no way to ski through life. The point of Outback is to relieve some of the trail congestion on West Way as the 6 crowd meets up with the junction at the triple. It doesn't look like it's having the desired effect either as many people today just braved the wind by the cliffs as they continued down West Way.

Despite the newbie crowd, West Way/Grand Slam was a pleasure to ski on with some great manmade complimented by the 2" that fell overnight. We then hit the standard fare - Foxes, North Glade/360, Whirlaway, Whitetail, Jericho, and then Left Bank/Cutter. All trails were in fine shape and the liftline moved nicely. We took one ride up the Q1 which opened at noon. Ton of snowmaking on Wild Turkey so look for that one soon.

Spent much of the post-lunch skiing on the west side of the hill. Foxes, as always were a lot of fun. We also had a chance to try Riptide/Willie's (the infamous cleared former glade). Pertty nice run actually, but it seemed more icey than the others. Jericho was also in great shape with some nice manmade powder on the sides, but slick at the top.

After hearing that Hunter picked up 6", it may not have been the best decision to hit Jiminy, but we had a great day nonetheless.

Off to Butternut tomorrow for free demo day, and maybe Hunter on Thursday...

So, in your opinion. . .is Jiminy a real resort? or a resort Wannabe?

Dude, let it go. It's a good place to ski; simple as that. I don't care how "resorty" a place is or not. It's the skiing that matters most to me.

BTW, I already responded to your lame arguments.

I definitely agree with Greg here. I personally do not care about whether a place is advertised as a ski resort or ski area or whatever, as long as the word ski is included.

Never been to Jiminy, though. Does anyone know how much of a drive it is from the Lowell, MA area? How does it compare to central NH areas like Sunapee and Gunstock?

Resort or area? How cares? The real question is, is Jiminy a mountain or a hill? I do not mean to put the place down. They make the max out of every inch of vert they have, and do a great job of snowmaking, but 1150 of vert can get old. I hit Jiminy every Tues. nite, but do day time skiing elsewhere, mostly Whiteface.

I don't know, but I think at least 1K' is enough to consider a ski area respectable (we've even had a thread/poll here on this very subject). I can definitely get in 4-5 hours of skiing enjoyment at Jiminy. Also, with only a 5 minute lift ride off the six, I think the mountain skis a lot bigger than it is, especially if it's not crowded.

I see your point and the 6 pack helps alot. I mean no offense to anyone who skis there alot, it just doesn't do it for me.
