Ski Sundown - 2/12/08 (night)

Date(s) Skied: Tuesday, 2/12/2008, 6:50 - 8:45 pm

Resort or Ski Area: Ski Sundown, CT

Conditions: Manmade packed snow, an inch of two of loose fresh on top. Moderate snow falling, temps in the 20's, calm.

Trip Report: Despite knowing Lower N'E was closed, I decided to head to the mountain anyway to enjoy the snow falling. Figured I could hit the Ex bumps. A bit under an inch had accumulated by the time I got there. Took a few runs on Canyon Run to Ex and Upper Nor'easter to Temptor. Finally called Grassi21 and we met at the summit. Took a few runs and unexpectedly met up with severine. We stuck mostly to Canyon run to Ex. At one point I decided to dip into the side of the trail far skier's right in and around some trees. Apparently, I hit a downed piece of bambo and fell down hard onto my left side bruising up my hip. I took a few more runs with Chris and Carrie to ski it off, but decided to pack it in around 8:45. I would rather rest it to be able to ski later in the week.

Was a real bummer not to have Lower N'E. Those bumps would have skied nicely with the fresh snow. Chris and I actually hiked up a bit of Lower N'E to ski the last 10 or so bumps which were lit up by one lone light. They indeed groomed a path skier's right up the entire run. A cherry picker/groomer was still parked about a 1/3 of the way up the trail. It's a shame as the bumps look like they had potential. Oh well. Looking forward to bumps on Temptor soon.

So, anyway, not a great night, but the new snow falling is nice. Probably a tad under 2" when I left and closer to 3" at home. Too bad it will get washed away tomorrow.

Thanks Dave. It'll be fine. It only swelled a little bit, but I'm icing it up now. Luckily it's not limiting any range of motion. Washing down two Advil with a couple Sam Honey Porters. It'll probably be stiff tomorrow. Could've been worse. Just pissed I did something so stupid, especially at night. I guess I was trying to make the trail more interesting since the bump options were limited. What a dummy.

You know Greg, I was going to follow you when you fell. Lucky I was far enough back to see you go down and avoided it. The fall didn't look too bad but your face showed it.

The ride home was fun. I had to stop 3 times to knock the ice off of my wipers. I'd say we have 3 solid inches here.

Great to meet you Carrie. I can't believe Brian has to bug you on the cell while you ride the lift.

It was great bumping into you guys! I was psyched that my boss let me off after only 2 hrs tonight. New snow is still a challenge for me. I felt very gaperish tonight, especially that run down Temptor. After you guys left, I did eventually try Gunny. Unfortunately, I let fear get the best of me and they were terrible runs. What a shame - lots of soft new snow. Very little scratchiness.

Hope your hip heals quickly, Greg!

ETA: Took too long to type...

Great to meet you, too, Chris! And I know... geez, he can't handle one night with the kids by himself?!

I'm sorry. I just assumed you guys knew each other. I would have done a more proper introduction. My bad.

And yeah - what's up with B calling you when you're trying to ski...?

That's okay, Greg. We met earlier when I scanned him.

At least I wasn't getting a call about my daughter's foul mouth like last time.

No worries. Carrie and I had a couple of conversations as she scanned my ticket tonight.

Hardly. You looked pretty confident to me. You like to ski fast too! Also, don't think I didn't take notice of you dipping into those Ex bumps. You're well on your way...

Actually my skis just don't like quick, short turns. Speed is something I'm working on, and I do get going pretty fast down the lower half of Canyon Run now. Even Exhibition, sometimes.

There actually was one line I found in the bumps that wasn't too bad for me (the little bit that I did) - right after I was telling you that I have a hard time turning quickly on those skis in the bumps. Couldn't find it again though. I keep dabbling on the sides but I have higher priorities right now. Thanks for the vote of confidence, though! I'm a real harsh critic of myself.
