High Speed Quad at Attitash to replace Summitt Triple?

Just back from nearly 2 weeks up in North Conway. Skiing conditions were decent up until the last few days when rain blanketed the mountain.

One day last week I rode the lift with a "local" who had a bit of good mountain info. Not sure whether all of this is true or not - but thought I'd share.

1. Attitash had a permit to install a high speed quad at Attitash, but they couldn't get it done in time and the permit expired. Apparently Attitash is working to renew the permit as we speak. Perhaps next summer?

2. Apparently Attitash spent over $1m on the new logo. (Money well spent? I'll let you decide)

3. ASC payed over $3.5 m on the new scanning system (which still seemed problematic over the holiday week). Each scanner supposedly cost $5k a piece.

At any rate, just thought I'd share what the latest gossip was up at Attitash. If anyone has any insights, feel free to post away.

See you on the mountain this weekend!

$1 million on a new logo? Hmmmm...now I know why ASC is in financial trouble .

As for the chairlift, I'd heard rumors for years...one has heard the same thing at Burke since the dinosaurs. I don't think that ASC has the $$$ to put in a new lift and all of the other things that have to be done (more trails to accomodate the traffic, etc). It will be interesting to hear what happens. What do you think?

I would guess that $1M number refers to replacing all literature, signage, etc. with the new logo, not the logo design itself. If it was the latter, well, then they did get ripped off. I could've done that for a cool $750K.

Yeah, I figured that it reflected all of the trademark registration, paperwork, and the new signs, etc. A lot of legal stuff that does not cost pennies.

Greg, didn't someone ask Sven about a new HSQ in his Alpinezone Ski Area Challenge this past summer?

Yep. Q&A #1:

http://skiing.alpinezone.com/article...esort=attitash

I will point Alex Kaufman to this thread and perhaps he can confirm or dispel some of this.

I just checked that out...14 minute lift ride? I don't recall it being that long! I also think that the lift crossover is cool!

I didn't think ASC had money for a new logo or for scanners, but I guess I was wrong. It would be a shame for them to waste money on these kind of trival things - vs. making some serious improvements in the resort.

I asked last year if there were any improvements for this year, and was told that nothing new was being done - other than they fixed in the leaking roof in Bear Peak Lodge.

However when I went to eat in the Bear Den (the sit down restaurant if you can call it that) there was a sign that said something to the effect - "New for 2005 the Rain Forest Room with free umbrellas provided! Please bear with us as we rework the concept. THE PLACE WAS LITTERALLY RAINING. Guess they ran out of money to fix the roof. Makes it a hard pill to swallow when you pay $40 for a couple of sandwiches.

Sven's challenge response from June addressed this accurately. Basically, it looks like something we may see a few year's down the road.

I just received an Email from Alex Kaufman, Attitash's Communications Manager. This is your typical inaccurate gossip. According to Alex, changing the logo totaled out at about $50K, roughly half to replace the old logo and the other for new promotional items they would have done anyway.

To bring all the eastern ASC areas online with the scanning system was also around $50K and each unit costs about $900.

So much for the local gossip...

Thanks for the clarification - I did say it was local gossip

Did Alex mention anything about them getting the permit for the high speed quad?

One thing for sure - I know first hand that the roof still leaks at Bear Peak!

No mention of that, but considering Alex's history of keeping me updated on happenings at Attitash, I'm sure I'll get a press release in the event something like this is officially planned.
