Mt. Superior 2/20/08

So after skiing Snowbird for the past few months...I couldn't resist the call of Mt. Superior. It's that giant you see across the canyon.

Here's a pic from a sunny day from snowbird. Superior is the huge peak. For scale, check out the road at the base.


Avy conditions were way low. Woke up at 7, got up the canyon by 9, and was skinning by 9:15. our late start was justified because it was cloudy out, and we needed a little time for the snow to soften up.


Unfortunately, clouds started to roll in and our visibility became limited.





The approach was sketchy at best in many places along the knife edge ridge.


Finally we got to the summit and dropped in.


The snow was way hard up top, but by the bottom it softened up into some fresh pow pow. The bottom line is the snow was variable. Getting downs was hard because of the limited visibility and plentiful cliff bands. Can't wait to get back out there. Next time I am bringing: ice axe, crampons, and a bluebird day.
