Snowbasin 2/24/2008

Resort or Ski Area: Snowbasin

Conditions: Fresh Powder falling as we were skiing.

Trip Report: Me, Roark, and Jeff decided to hit Snowbasin today. Reports called for a lot of snow and wind. When we got there snow/hail was falling and wind was strong. The only thing open was the gondola and it took a 1/2 hour to get to the peak because of strong wind. Coming down, visibility was extremly poor and we were getting pelted with hail. We decided that once we get to the bottom, we would stop at the ticket boot and see about getting a refund or a voucher, just didn't thing it was worth it today. The answer we got was; No Refunds.

OK, we're stuck here took the gondola up again and it appears the wind died down. Suddenly the hail turned to snow, lots of snow. Next trip down we felt nothing but velvet underfoot! We didn't make it all the way back to the base, we decided to stay on the upper mountain lifts and worked our way over towards the John Paul area, the John Paul lift was closed. Each run just got better and better, only problem, visibilty was poor. By about 12:30 we decided to ski down to the cars and get out the powder skis. Jeff and Roark wanted to get lunch so we stopped in the lodge and got lunch. I tried calling V, who was stuck at the condo with her fractured ankle, no reception. Between that and the poor visibility, had a few bouts with vertigo, I decided to call it a day. We had to get 6-8 inches in about a 2 hour period and it's supposed to continue until tomorrow. I figured tomorrow will be stellar and I'll save my energy for that. Jeff and Roark stayed and I'm sure Roark may want to add to this report, in the meantime, here's some pics:

The snow coming down was kind of wierd, it looked like balls of foam and was just as light.

Couple of posers:

We had just got done wiping the snow of ourselfs and within a minute, this is what we looked like:

Mr. Roark:

The drive back:

Sounds like a 50/50 day. But at least you're getting some freshies. the poor vis is rough, it nailed me on my last day at Snowbird, had to give up. looks like the storms will be clearing out though.
