| These bluebird days with great snow are the days I want to remember in July when its 96 degrees. After meeting up with Jim and Wulf, we decided on some runs over at Spruce. The bright blue skies, great snow, perfect temperature in the upper teens, and no wind made it seem almost unreal. Here's Wulfie on top of Spruce... http://tinyurl.com/2a5mez ...before slaying some powder. http://tinyurl.com/yo68kc Then it was JJ's turn. http://tinyurl.com/2dvjpd After a few runs between the trails at Spruce, sessioning a bunch of short but sweet shots, we headed off for some steep tree skiing down a new-found shot. http://tinyurl.com/24m7hj The terrain around Mansfield still boggles my mind...everyday brings a new shot, a great ski run. Today brought us to fields of white magic under glacial-blue frozen falls. http://tinyurl.com/28nbm5 And for the odd picture of the day...JJ's ski got away from him. http://tinyurl.com/2gxdnh We parted ways with Wulf (who'd already done several runs, including a trek to HB) and headed up the Gondi. Jim and I did a run under the Kitchen Wall and noted the very deep snowpack in there. Later, we ran into Allen who was doing some snow depth testing for a watershed project...he noted 110" of snow depth in that area. Of course some of that is blown in but however it got there, its a lot of snow when your skiing nearly 10 feet off the deck. Up at the top of the quad, it was getting late but I can tell the days are getting longer...sun's staying on the gondi side till just about the end of the day. This felt so peaceful and calm compared to yesterday. http://tinyurl.com/ypu4fs Jim and I planned our last run of the day to be Bruce. JJ wanted to show me the Waterfall line and there's nothing better than a late-day run down to the Matterhorn in the afternoon sunshine-turning-alpenglow. Well, part of the Waterfall line was spent doing the thickest bushwhack I've done all season, but other than that the run down to the Mountain Road was pretty sweet. At the road, we caught the shuttle back up the cars. Now its after 5pm and we were the only cars left in the Midway lots. Someone's gotta close the place down...its always an adventure on Mansfield. -Scott |
