Stowe March 7

I'm falling behind on the reports, but here's the one for last Friday:

So its Friday and as usual the skivt-l contingent all ends up parking within a 30 foot radius in middle Midway. The day was bluebird. The same old views never get old to me.

But first, we took a run down the Clipper to see what the snow surface would be like, and found quite enjoyable woods conditions. As the sun continued to warm the snow and air, the conditions turned more spring-like and this was the first corn I've skied this season. Next run we headed down the main Angel Food lines which was much better than expected as it was softening quickly.

Then we wanted to go hit the Rock Garden...so the marching band took off up the climbing gully in rapidly warming temperatures.

Enough rime and ice made it possible to ski down the ridgeline in some capacity. Several times I almost pitched myself off into Underhill. It was pretty entertaining stuff at times.

We then ran into someone coming up behind the Cliff House solo, and it was lister Bill. He was going to the Garden as well. Cool.
The snow was certainly a little variable in spots but some good turns were had. While the RG can be a short run, the appeal for me is that when you're up there it really doesn't feel like Vermont anymore.

Spring/variable conditions existed in there with some turns being perfectly stable spring-corn and others being punchy and unpredictable. Its always fun though.

We cruised down and decided to head over to Spruce to show Scotty the Butt-crack run. The snow in the hardwood glades dropping down to the notch was the nicest we found all day. There was an inch of pure corn on top of a supportable base....it skied so smooth as each turn was cleaving off the top layer of spring corn and leaving you with a harder surface underneath to get an edge into. Excellent!

Down RT 108 and back to the gondola, we get to the top only to see about 30 people standing there gaping up at the cliffs behind the Cliff House. Someone is making their way down the vertical rock wall that has a few white patches on it. We immediately recognize that its Sam and Allen. That was pretty awesome to watch...those kids have sllab. This is where we also ran into Alex Friend. All the sudden there's a posse of 8 now. After a bench run, Allen and Sam wanted to get one more Rock Garden run in but I was beat. They headed back up to the summit ridge....Bill had something off the Kitchen Wall he wanted to do, so he went that way...and the rest of us did a cool down run in Chapel Woods off the Quad.

I'm not sure...maybe JD can fill us in but Friday was my last ski day before I came down with the flu or some other sort of nasty little bug. I'm hoping to get back out tomorrow but needed today to get some strength back. It looks pretty nice out there with temps in the low 20s under mostly sunny skies. My buddy called and said snow surfaces today are skiing pretty good. I'd imagine the 6" of upslope snow in the past 48 hours groomed in nicely with the ice cubes. And JD...man we're at 96" at the stake at the earliest date since the nuclear winter of 2000-2001! It is mind numbing to think of where we might be at without the 5-7 mixed precipitation and thaw events....

Very firm base with some dust building up on top. This week is looking promising, esspecially if the Friday Saturday event stays colder up north and up high. They didn't lose snow, but got alot of rain and wind...we got bomber base, but need a dump.

Also, figured I'd pass this along...its of two friends skiing the cliffs above the Cliff House. Usually only skiable when the stake nears 100 inches. These guys love stuff like this. There are two of them in this photo...Sam is the obvious skier making the turn, and Allen is just to lookers lower right of Sam. They both stomped the final billygoat air. The white on the bottom of the photo is the roof of the Cliff House.
