New 3G compatible iPhones should be coming out in the next few months. You should be able to get the 1st gen ones for cheap at that point.

In addition to price, my other gripe with iphones are that you have to use AT&T. It would be more appealing to me if I could pick my network / calling plan.

Even if you can unlock them, they're a GSM phone and will only work on, say, AT&T or T-Mobile. You would not be able to use one on Verizon, which is CDMA.
