|  Sugarloaf 4-16-08 Snowfield corn harvest Area skied: Sugarloaf, Maine. Date skied: April 16th, 2008 from 9:30am - 3:00pm Surface conditions: Machine groomed, spring snow, corn Weather: Partly to mostly sunny, warm to hot in the afternoon. 44F (base) at 9:30am, 59F (base) at 3:00pm. Today was one of the best ski days of my life and easily the top 5 at Sugarloaf and we knew that we had a winner of a day from the very first run which was Tote Road from the summit and unlike yesterday, we had soft corn snow for most of the length of the run. Narrow Gauge was next with easy to carve spring snow and we did that into the Terrain Park which was still a bit firm, but fun anyway. We went back up to the top of Spillway and skied a groomed Ramdown to a silky smooth and groomed Cruiser with great soft corn snow. We took the Superquad to Timberline and skied Timberline and Binder and both trails had nice snow that was just the right consistency and neither to hard or mushy. By now it was snowfield time and we made the treck to the backside and where rewarded with incredibly soft and deep corn on High Rigger and especially on Jagger with kick turns in deep spring snow under an uncomfortably hot April sun. Hey Dad, I thought you said there was alot of snow back here:   Deep corn on Pure Heat:  We made it back to the summit and skied down White Nitro which was nearly 75% loose corn snow the whole way down. Me on White Nitro:  We ate lunch and ditched our jackets and helmets and skied the rest of the day with just a hat and googles on with a long sleeve shirt top. We made it back into the snowfields and skied down Ignitor which was okay with much dodging of small rock and underbrush that was half buried. Ignitor:  We continued down a corn filled Widowmaker and down Whiffletree back to the Superquad. Sluice was next and filled with soft corn and hardly any hardpack underneath as this trail is usually a bit slick no matter what time of the year it may be. Gondi Line was next and probably the most fun I have ever had on this trail save for a powder day with tons of soft corn snow and Warren had a blast skiing right down the middle of the run. Our last run was down Double Bitter with silky soft perfectly spaced moguls making for a workout in the late afternoon warmth. We cut over to Lower Tote Road and skied the corn in Ram Pasture Glade. | what's your guestimate on how long the snowfields will remain open? looks like I'm gonna miss out this year. Won't be able to make it until the weekend of the 4th.

I do not think that the backside snowfields will make it until closing as the snow near the summit that faces south is melting rather rapidly. The frontside including White Nitro and Powder Keg should make it into May. The area off of Spillway and the Superquad should last well into May.
