Camera Sunday River 04-19-08

Area skied: Sunday River

Date skied: April 19th, 2008 from 8:30am - 1:00pm

Weather: sunshine, 38F at 8:30am, 69F at 1:00pm.

Surface conditions: Machine groomed, corn, mashed potatoes.

We started out our last day of our ski vacation with a ride up to North Peak and down a silky smooth Dreamaker which was fun to bomb turns on in the groomed corduroy early in the morning. We did this three times and then skied down Grand Rapids which had a fairly large bare section to the Sunday River Express.

Dreamaker:

We skied down a firm Lazy River to inspect Last Tango which was looking very thin with more avoiding thin/bare areas than having fun. We continued on to Spruce Peak and skied down American Express which had a few rocks poking through (unmarked) and down Lower Lazy River which was like skiing in oatmeal to the Sunday River Express.

We skied a groomed Right Stuff which was fun if a bit scratchy with a firm base under loose corn snow. Top Gun had moguls but I found them to have a irregular pattern with alot of hardpacked snow underneath and in between the bumps.

Right Stuff:

We went back down Lazy River and skied Last Tango which was okay with heavy sticky wet snow and alot of thin cover, not the best tree run of the year for sure.

Last Tango a bit thin:

We talked with various people on the chairlift as today was the first time in five days of skiing that we have had to share a ride with someone else. When a lady asked where we had been skiing and I mentioned Sugarloaf, she started to complain that she disliked the fact that Sunday River would be closing in late April while Sugarloaf would continue into May. She continued with her rant about how she missed her free ski day in May at Sunday River and her $279 mid week ASC pass

Cascades and Upper and Lower Sunday Punch where skied as our last two runs of the day and both had a mix of loose corn and hardpacked snow underneath.

By 1:00pm it was nearly 70F and the snow was turning into a thick gruel, so we called it a day.

We were on Agony for a bunch of runs at the end of the day, bumps were perfect. Not really worried about bare spots, great vibe out there today. Radio Run and Hammer were hitting it hard...and a great time at beer thirty...another 10day.

I updated my post with pictures as I was too tired to do it last night.

.

Can't really knock her for missing that pass. While Boyne's pass offerings are very fair, they are not as affordable as back in the All for One days. As for the River closing and Sugarloaf staying open, can't really say anything bad about that. It could be worse, they could both close in April like they did last year.
