This Saturday at Sugarbush

A number of us that would have skied Killington will be skiing Sugarbush this weekend, and have plans to let Sugarbush know it. I am printing up T-shirts that read

Killington
Refugee

and on the back

Sugarbush
The Real King of Spring

(Thanks, Win!)

If you would like to participate, thanking Sugarbush and complaining to Killington that they closed early, send me a message here or on Kzone. The shirts are 10 each, and will likely be green with white lettering. You can pick them up at Sugarbush on Saturday Morning, place to be announced.

Cool

Great idea!

Especially as a lot of Sugarbush regulars used to go down to k-mart to finish their seasons.

The week they've been closed hasn't been good. It has been awesome! Met a bunch of people from there, Monday. They seemed to have a good time.

I hope to get a pic of a bunch of you together, for our board. It would be great if Sandy was able to get one for the website, too.

Uhm, no offense, but was it a surprise to anyone that Killington closed early? I thought they announced the closing date when they started selling passes last year...

The best way you could have shown Win appreciation would have been to just ski Sugarbush all season...

Last year, both Killington and Sugarbush closed May 6th.

When Killington sold their passes, it was described as to mid April, with a conditions permitting disclaimer. I'm not saying we were misled. This was their (POWDR's) first year, and we really weren't sure what to expect. I did think they would go at least as long as their peers in the industry.

I said we were showing appreciation that Sugarbush is staying open 1-2 weeks longer than Killington, and this really wasn't certain until now. Mount Snow made the statement that they would turn the lifts as long as people came. Sunday River, Sugarloaf, and Jay are still open. I'm sure a few others are too.

As Geoff has said many times, Killington is training us to go elsewhere. We're just going to have a little fun with POWDR as we do.

Well, it seems to me they were pretty clear with the April 13 end date and they did extend to 4/20. Seems like they could have gone longer so I do feel for the loyal Killington spring skiers a bit. Hopefully everyone now understands that it is what it is and can start to get over it and move on. In any event, have fun with your "statement" this weekend, but more importantly, enjoy the skiing. I'm hitting the 'Bush on Friday and I'll try to get a video out late Friday night.

Actually, I'd be willing to bet that the April 13th date, just like the opening date, was lawyer-driven. At a resort that traditionally operated from October until June, they didn't want a class action suit and the attorney general's office coming down on them. They never formally came out and said that that April 13th was the definitive last date. You'll notice they moved it out a week because their reservations people had booked some huge Brit groups so the date wasn't set in stone. This isn't the Rocky Mountains where ski resorts sit on National Forest land and have a closing date fixed in their lease.

Killington still has edge-to-edge cover on Superstar and in the Canyon. They could have operated for another week or two with only a minor amount of pushing snow around. With the amount of ill will they have created, I'm baffled that they didn't announce that they'd run for another week. There must be a staffing problem because they certainly could have sold enough day tickets this weekend to cover operating for the week. There were a huge number of day ticket people on the hill last weekend. That's never changed.

I hope they learn from this mistake and don't paint themselves into a corner next year where they have to close while still having plenty of cover. They have a base village to build and they've turned the town against them.

That's just a myth. All the resorts on NF land can change their closing dates on their lease as long as it's within the management's goals and perameters. Lincoln Peak at the Bush is on leased NF land and change their opening/closing dates like we did this season and last season........

The bear habitat in SB Basin and the summits of the Bush being the Long Trail results in several parties being involved in the management of the land but the resorts have been dealing with this process for years so not a big deal.
