Stowe's ND 4/30

After skiing a Bolton run on Tuesday and finding a skiff of snow up top, I knew I had to head to the big mountain on Wednesday for possibly the last foray into a wintertime environment this season. On the drive over, it started snowing in Williston on 89 and continued for the remainder of the drive to Stowe. In Moscow, we hit a squall of heavy snow which felt odd with all the green around.

Sara and I pulled into the Midway parking lot and it was evident the higher elevations had received something; even if it wasn't much it was white and that's what we like to see.

On the way up, occasional snow showers rolled through and watching it snow against hillsides of dead leaves made it feel more like early November than almost May 1st.

As we got higher, the views became progressively better. This is what northern Vermont should look like on the last day of April.

Up top, the temperature was in the upper 20s and the wind was blowing, but the Stone Hut clearing provides shelter from the wind and a spot to sit in the sun.

For the trip down, it was decided that we'd do some glades on either side of Nosedive...they were still filled in and it was a lot of fun to make some turns through the trees. In fact, the Nosedive glades are completely skiable down to the return traverse and if one wanted to, you could probably still patch something together down to Cliff Trail.

The middle pitch of Nosedive is still only one cat-width wide but its holding firm, I'd wager the whole thing remains skiable top to bottom through the weekend. Lower Nosedive, below the National cut, was the best skiing yesterday as it froze solid with the cold temps only to have the sun soften the top 1-2" into butter. One can still cruise GS-style turns down corn here before the snow runs out at Crossover, 100 yards from the car at the Midway lot.
