Greatest stdev quote of all time:

“‘We are seeing things that were 25-standard deviation events, several days in a row,’ said David Viniar, Goldman’s chief financial officer.”

We'll she should have tried snowboarding...at least she would have spent most of the first day on her back.

funny thing was that said girl followed me from nj to vt. i told here many times what the deal was. so its not like it was a big surprise. i used to have a board rack in bedroom btu she thought it looked tack so she made move it to the living room. i now know it was because she was jealous

Actually, it's the only way you can work off all that beer.

I'm guessing Avgas (100 octane gasoline for prop planes) costs about 5 or 6 bucks a gallon now. If you don't own a plane you can rent one by the hour, the time is charged whenever the engine is running. It was $119 an hour to rent a late model plane and $80 an hour to rent the older one a few years ago. The rental usually includes the fuel.
I know you long ago got back on topic, but I just read this thread & have to agree with ERJ-145CA that private aviation should not be grouped in with yachting. I paid $5k to get my license 7 years ago, and I pay $40/month to be in a club that has planes for $65-$85/hr, including fuel & everything. That's in the Boston area, which is pretty high cost.

So I can take 1-2 other people to Sunday River for a weekend for about $200. That is comparable to the cost to drive the 300 miles if you include all costs. And the $5k entrance fee is not too bad--a lot of non-wealthy people spend that on a motorcycle, snowmobile, etc.

A friend in CT told me 2 yrs ago that it would cost him about $2000 in fuel to get his 28 foot boat from CT to Boothbay Harbor vs $200 to tow it.
