| Sunday River 2005-02-12 Date(s) Skied: 2005-02-12 Resort or Ski Area: Sunday River Conditions: Lots fo fresh snow everywhere, high winds Trip Report: We arrived for first tracks and left our traditional starting point, Barker lodge, and headed for Jordan Bowl. The winds were such that we feared for wind holds, but got one!!!! The tops of Rogue Angel and Excalibur were somewhat windblown, and starting to expose ice, but after skiing down the highest sections, the rest of the trails were to die for. Very nice cruisers. We headed back the Barker area to escape the wind and the scoured trails it left behind. Bim's whim, while it involves about 100 feet of walking or uphill herring bone, was well worth the effort. It is quickly become\ing mandatory for us at the River. Our mandatory trails are :Lazy River, Rogue Angel, Excalibur and Bim's Whim. Today, we had opportunity to watch some very talented youngsters in the halfpipe, doing things I will never do. Around 2 PM, various busy intersections were getting scraped down, with intermittant snow piles. This is the latest this has happened for us this year. It is unfortunate that I strained the rear of my right knee, when I hyper extended it sliding on this stuff. We headed to the White cap learning area for some easier skiing to safeguard my knee. It soon became clear that I needed to get off it and get back to Barker. This was a training run for me, basically skiing on my left leg. I was concerned because we had a bunch of folks meeting at Attitash tomorrow, and I wanted to ski with them. And we are hiking into a camp in Baxter next weekend also. A whirlpool and ice pack later that night, and all seems well for a trip to Attitash tomorrow. To be continued.....

| I was at Sunday River all weekend, too. I agree that Saturday was rough with the clouds and wind where trails were scoured, but in other spots they did a fine job of not grooming very much, leaving beautiful piles of powder around (which I didn't know how to handle ... d'oh!). Dream Maker, for a green, kicked my butt due to this. After lunch we headed out to Jordan Bowl so I could run Lollapalooza while my friends went into Blind Ambition (glade). They said it was incredible with the fresh snow. Of course, coming off the top of the lift was a nightmare as it was almost completely blown off to scratch ice, and the exposure up there (even with the fence) is scary. Once I got down a bit to the snow I was doing well, except for all those snow piles which got me a bit out of control until I found myself flying through the air backwards and landing, skis up, in a huge plume of snow. Sunday dawned clear, sunny, less wind, and overnight snow capped the peaks. Right back to Lollapalooza and the top was in great shape and it was the finest cruise I've ever been on. Dream Maker was much more navigable, and having done the top and bottom pieces as part of the North Peak => Jordan traverse (and back), I did a full run of Escapade, my first true blue (after Conifer at Wachusett). I hope you had a good day at Attitash; Sunday was definitely the day to be at Sunday River (and less crowded, too). I am thoroughly addicted to skiing now.
