Hunter Mountain NY 3/20/05

Date(s) Skied: 3/20/05

Resort or Ski Area: Hunter Mountain, Hunter NY

Conditions: VARIOUS

Trip Report:
Conditions various? that's an understatment. It snowed on top of the mountain, and drizzled on the bottom. As a result, some of the trails benefited from the precip (Jimmy Huegla Express, East Side, Bleecker Street) while others were Grade A crud (upper Wayout, Minya Konka). Hunter West was skied off by the time I got there. But there was one little girl who dutifully wedged her way down Wayout with her parents' guidance. I have a love/hate relationship with very young children on skis--they're so adorably diligent, and too often make ME look really really bad!

I haven't been to Hunter since they built the Learning Center, so I was a little disoriented. I was used to getting my rentals at the main lodge because the lines were shorter. On the other hand, it was very nice not having to do a major expedition in the parking lot to find my bus. And while I realize that "YOU ARE HERE" is the stuff of cliches on the big trail directories when you get off the lifts, they really ARE quite helpful.

I should add that this trip wouldn't have been possible without Nycski.com, because their bus to Hunter makes a stop in Paramus, New Jersey. I'd have to drive 2.5 hours each way to spend a day at Hunter--but I'm only half an hour away from Paramus! By leaving the rest of the driving to them, I wasn't too tired to ski when I got there, and I wasn't too tired to drive home when I was dropped off. Of course there's a catch--you need to park on Route 17 South and use a walkway to get the to northern side to catch the bus. But from now on, I can go to Mountain Creek because I want to, not because I can't get to Hunter!
