How bad is this? I guess I should start to back everything up....

ditto on the Backups,
..and for bad portions of the disk(EX: "scratching" sort of sound) in the SYSTEM area...Partition Commander is easy to work with....simply partition off the bad area, then re-format/reload...etc. ..$.01.

You should back everything up all the time.

Hard drives often don't give you hints that they're dying.

You don't have to back up everything... Just the things you want to see again.
