Gone but not forgotten.......Lost Ski Areas

Very neat!!

Have any of you hiked & skiied any of the "lost ski areas?"

I believe I read on some message board that it's common for people to still go and hike/ski at Brodie. Isn't that the one near Wa-wachussets and it closed fairly recently?

This spring I hiked up Silvermine Ski area in Harriman State Park - there was a geocache up there at the top of the ski lift.

There was still about a foot of snow (a little more up top) and I was postholing into it. I really wish I brought my skis.. even though it wasn't steep, it still would have been fun to get down "the fast way."

Mt Tom season Pass for 90-91 season $329

ASC Bronze Pass 05-06 season $379
Butternut Pass 05-06 $199
Catamount Pass (they have night skiing) 05-06 $249

Mt Tom was a cool place. It was the closest ski area to my house.

Brodie is close to Jiminy Pear(like three miles). It has been closed for at least two years now. The rumor was the Silverleaf was going to build conds there. I don't know if anything has started yet, but even if it has you should still be able to earn your turns. I don't think they are going to mess with trails to much since it was part of the terms of the sale from Jiminy Peak that if this place was ever to have skiing again, Jiminy got the first shot at running it.

Nice thing about geocaching is people post photos of the area around a cache..

Actually, if you ever go to Scotland, they are all "Scottish" and not "Scotch," since the latter is a whiskey. And boy can they make good whiskey

This geocaching thing pizza posted (I back-tracked the URL) looks like a lot of fun! I would like to try it someday.

OK - I do realize that most of my stories are 25 years old, but Brodie was a LOT of fun back in the day.

When I went to SUNY Albany, we took a night skiing class at Brodie for a phys ed credit. The bus showed up on 8 consecutive Wed nights, and on the ride over we would drink the beers we had smuggled on. Then after the required hour-long lesson (we would help the instructors with some of the newbies to make it less boring) we had a couple hours of free skiing which was great fun. Finish up at the lodge bar until the bus showed back up and it was tough way to earn college credits, believe me.

And since Brodie was apparently owned by a big Irish family, their TV ads always pitched the place as being "high in Kelly's Irish Alps". Every St. Patrick's Day they would spray green food coloring all over a couple trails and have a big party.

Too bad it's gone. It was a twin to Jiminy - right around 1000' of vertical and a nice local/regional feel to it.
