2005-12-24 Sunday River

Date(s) Skied: Saturday, December 24, 2005

Resort or Ski Area: Sunday River

Conditions: Packed powder base, machine groomed surface (As advertised)

Trip Report: First let me tell you that hardly anyone was there. Only once were lines so long that they went most of the length of the ropes. Often times you skiied up to the lift. Must have been Christmas eve or something. Temps were high 20's and low 30's.

We got there early for first tracks, and skiied lots of corduroy. Started at the barker lodge and headed towards Jordan bowl. The closer we got to Jordan Bowl, the windier it got, which can be an issue when trying to go into the wind down the real gentle slopes needed to get there. We did Rogue Angel first at Jordan Bowl, and it was recently blown and not yet groomed. We struggled across it, as did others. The snow would bog you down and grab one ski. We decided this trail was not yet fun and did Lolopalooza. Into the wind again, but this was a nice cruiser. After that we headed back to Barker for snacks.

All around mid mountain range was very nice. They had some 80 trails open and they were decently done. We headed over to White heat and got thaaaaat close to doing it, but decided to take Heats on and go down. This was a nice day to ski and we made the most of it. In a half hour you could do 3 long runs. The trails were uncrowded and nicely prepared. We did some trails so many times we actually got bored.

I have to say the River has done a great job getting this mountain together for skiing. Now school vacation is going to clog it all up, but there's always next weekend.
