Ski Sundown (Night) - 2/12/2006

Date(s) Skied: Sunday, 2/12/2006, 6:40-10:10 pm

Resort or Ski Area: Ski Sundown, New Hartford, Connecticut

Conditions: Powder, crud, a few scratchies underneath. Full moon, clearing skies, high teens, little wind.

Trip Report: Got to the mountain around 6:30 - only ten minutes longer than usual. Roads were in decent shape. First run was down Nor'easter. Beautiful smooth snow with fun crud piles and moguls to play on. Took a few more runs down Gunbarrel. On one ride up got a call from bvibert who was almost there.

Eventually met up with Brian and we ripped many runs on the whole mountain. Gunny and Noreaster had the best surface with a lot of crud and bumps to play on. I would say the mountain picked up 10-12". The AC3s perfomed well. Great surface; great company; great night! Thanks B!

What did they end up doing with the terrain park, Greg? It was on Stinger, I believe, but you were worried that they would put another on Gunbarrel.

Gunny has been reserved for races so it remains free of terrain elements. Unfortunately, it also gets groomed to hell all the time. Nor'easter is the designated "bump" run but Gunbarrel would be better for it. I think they could leave a few cat tracks width ungroomed and still have plenty of space skier's right for the races. Stinger is jammed packed top to bottom with some pretty impressive park elements. Brian also took me over to the Sunnyside learning area which was great to be able to see where my oldest will take part in ski camp next December.

Yeah, it was a good night for sure! I'm glad I was able to join you. I was really suprised how well the days snow had held up, and really happy to see that they hadn't groomed anything.

Beano, the terrain park is on Stinger where it'll stay... at least for this season.

Oh and thanks B for the words of encouragement after all my feeble daffy attempts!

I thought the same thing, but they've setup some pretty big GS type of courses this year that take up damn near the whole width of Gunny. They even started closing it down when races are in progress.

They looked pretty good from where I was... A lot better than anything I would ever attempt!
