Originally planned on coming early but the weather was turning me off since there was rain predicted in the afternoon. However, the skiing bug got me and I decided to maked the hour and forty minute trek to Killington listening to reggae on the The Joint on Sirrus/XM radio for the ride there to get me stoked.

When I got there, I was excited to get out! My first run was around 1 with hopes to get four runs in. I have to admit, I have not skied bumps for quite some time since I tore my ACL two years ago. My wife and I skied Stein's Run at Sugarbush but that was nothing compared to Suparstar and todays bumps. I was at first intimidated by the bump pattern since they varied - mostly skied off on the down hill sides and soft on the up hill sides. It really felt like a lot of work! Nonetheless, I got the bump jitters out of my system and decided to take one more run before eating. The second run seemed so much easier and I was able to pick lines that felt better and I felt that I had more control.

After the two runs it was time for a burger and Switchback. For some reason ski area burgers just taste good - they cooked it perfect. I was talking to a few poeple and they said that Friday and Saturday were much better - made me wish I came Saturday! In any case, I also overheard a conversation that skiing far to the skiers right on the headwall then moving the the skiers left at the trail crossing was a good line - so that became my next run!

I scoped out the trail on the lift ride up to see what they were talking about and I was able to ski that run with very little stopping. It was exactly like they talked about! By the time I got to the bottom it started raining and I was not sure if I should go back up. As a result, I opted for another Switchback to wait it out a little. That was a good call since the clouds were getting darker by the minute and it satrted to come down more!

I have to say, Spring has brought me back to the bumps from Ragged to Jay Peak to Sugarbush to Mt Snow and others) and today really helped to get the feel for them again! Thanks Killington for a cool day! One last note, I was surprised that there were not more people!

We have had a great ski season and I look forward to that ominous June 1st - we will be there! However, it will be a close one since more rain is in the forecast and a few hotter days ahead between now and then.

Sorry - The light was kind of flat (cloudy) so it is hard to really see the bumps!

Date(s) Skied: 5/18/13

Resort or Ski Area: Killington

Conditions: Sun, a few clouds, and tons-o-corn

Trip Report:
I was a little disappointed when I didn't see the usual $30 Liftopia deal on their site. On to plan B, I had lost my Greek Peak season's pass just prior to their closing, and found it cheaper to tell them I had forgotten it, $3 a pop, than say I'd lost it, $20, so I didn't replace it. On to plan C, I had thrown out a handful of used lift tickets not too long ago, I did find a Gore, and was hoping something was attached to my rarely used second pair of ski pants, bingo, another Gore pass!

I hit the road at 4:30 and pulled into the K1 lot exactly four hours later. The first drop of the headwall was a little shaky with zero warm up options, but subsequent runs were smoother. There is still a shitload of snow on Superstar with chair to chair skiing. The massive blown headwall has flattened considerably over the last two weeks, but it still exists. The pinch visible from the Superstar webcam is quite wide, and you don't even notice it coming down the trail. The only spot that's getting thin is the end of the flatter middle portion, just before the pinch, and even then it's still very skiable. Deeper cover is on skier's far left at that point. Other than there, no worries of touching bottom anywhere.

It is quite taxing to ski with no milder Skye Lark option to break things up, so I broke for an early lunch around 11 and grilled up a burger and a couple hotdogs at my car. After lunch I wondered if Shredder of Gnar would possibly make the trip from Albany. I'd read a TR or two of his from K this Spring. While on the lift I spotted his usual Spring uniform, a "Ski Tahoe" sweatshirt. We hooked up for some turns later, he had been there Friday too. We were both content to make runs of a hundred yards or so, then stopping to rest for a minute or so before repeating. I gave some thought of just heading home at the end of the day for fear of being too sore to enjoy Sunday, but couldn't resist one more chance to ski this late in the year. I figure to take it easy Sunday, and bag it early if I must. Not a bad time of year to just hang out, did that a couple times at both the summit, and the umbrella bar deck. A little sore today, but not too bad, seven hours of bumps will do that.:wink;

Drove up on Saturday afternoon. It was pouring rain during much of the drive, when we got to the access road it was drizzling. The clouds had parted to reveal the damage done...we are down to Superstar only folks. Skyelark was cooked with big breaks in the snow and alot of walking at the bottom. Bittersweet is gone.

Found out it had rained most of the day Saturday. Few people had been skiing. Sunday dawned with clouds but they parted and it was sunny when we got to the lift at 10:00. The skiing between 10am-12pm was fantastic. The snow was great. The rain had washed the bumps down a bit and alot of the mush was gone. Even though I hadn't skiied in 3 weeks I felt and skied great. There were not many people there until about 11 or so. The bump course on the upper headwall and on the left on the lower headwall were money. Some of the best spring skiing I've had in a while.

At noon the weather changed. Clouds rolled in and it started to drizzle a bit. Traffic picked up and the bumps were soon May sized...BIG. But the skiing remained excellent. At about 2pm my 10 year old's legs gave out. I was amazed he lasted that long and I was really proud of him...the bumps were as big as he is. His skiing took a giant leap forward this season.

I got him something to eat and he settled in with his Ipod while I skiied another hour or so. Things were getting a little scraped off and the bumps were enormous. The bump courses just kept skiing well and at 3pm I didn't really want to stop, but I admit my legs were getting tired. Took one more run and figured time to stop, at which point the clouds thinned and the sun started to come out again. So of course that meant one more run. At 3:30 I was toast and we started the trip home.

Great way to end my lift served skiing. That was day 50 for me, and skiing on May 12 meant my season went from November 10 to May 12...my first 6 month season in years. I'm not going to be able to go to K next weekend, and I question if they will make it to Memorial Day unless they push snow around. There is plenty there and the top of the upper headwall has good coverage, but the lower headwall is going fast about halfway down near the lift tower. If the weather stays warm I don't see how that will last, but fingers are crossed.

St-Sauveur is about 35 miles north from Montreal - in the first cluster of ski areas in the Laurentians.
I don't remember off hand the skier-visits numbers, but its one of the most important in Quebec, if not the most.
Ah yes, they had the longest season in Eastern Canada for years. No another ski areas in EC are even close.

May 5 - Mt St-Sauveur - 2 hours away from Ottawa (and 40 from Montreal). Hot Summer skiing.

Trip Report:
Couldn't let this one go by without posting... what an amazing day at Sugarloaf! We had more great days there than I can count this year, but the last Sunday in April was the best --- hands down. Bluebird skies, soft snow, wall-to-wall coverage, no wind, and temps warm enough to render jackets optional. Saw lots of shorts and short sleeves out there, and there was a definite party vibe on the mountain (most of the restaurants in The Village, including The Bag, were closing for the season that afternoon).

Superquad and Skyline were the open lifts for the day, but I made the 10-minute trek to the summit, and White Nitro was well worth it. Skied everything from moguls to groomers to glades... not a bad turn to be had. Runs of the day were on Misery Whip and Narrow Gauge.

Well we decided to make the trek to Sugarbush ffrom New Hampsire! Our attitude - we will ski what ever we get since it is a free ski day after all! We arrived with temps around 70 at 11 am. We were stoked to make a few runs and call it a season so we booted up in the parking lot and headed for the lift. It was a shorts and t-shirt (or on my wifes case a skirt and t-shirt day). I have to say a skirt with ski boots on - well that is hot!

As we got past the buildings we realized that the lift that was operating was close to the Wunderbar - to the hike up continued! As we rounded the corner, we thought - holy lift line! The line was about a 20-30 minute wait which is when we decided that two runs and done. We got on the lift and we were super excited about the season we have had - 36 days. I know - there are many of you who killed that number but it was our personal best and that was skiing twice each weekend through most of the winter and a couple night skiing sessions! Mid week is not usually in the cards due to work!

As we got off the lift and looked down Stein's Run - and my wife's first reactions was "this is a double black?". She never skied anything marked as a double black so panic set in! I basically told here to use her skills and use the bumps and the entire trail for control! dropping in was probably the most terrifying for her - but after that she did great! In fact, it skied rather easy since the huge bumps from earlier in the season were much smaller - so the classification as double black was probably more intimidating than the actual trail for her. After that first run she felt confident enough to give it one more try and then we called in a season! Waiting in line was expected but twice was good for us!

We headed into Castlerock Pub for a bite and a beverage and the vibe was cool, relaxed and there were smiles everywhere! It was a great way to end the season and my wife found out that she can ski better than she thinks! Although she still hates bump skiing!

Thank you Sugarbush!

Moderate bumps!

Resort or Ski Area: Sugarloaf

Conditions: Spring

Trip Report: After anxiously missing the last two weekends of what seemed like great spring skiing, I finally hit the slopes again for one last hurrah on Sugarloaf's closing day. Usually it isn't too difficult to find a ride to Sugarloaf but it is that time of year where everyone's job at the mountain has ended and everyone has tons of school work to do meaning not too many people from UMF are driving up there. This weekend proved no exception to that so fortunately SnowMonster saved the day for me by offering me a ride to the mountain. It was a pleasure meeting SnowMonster and he really is a great guy. I wonder if we will ever cross paths again, perhaps decades away in the future?

We got on the lift before 11 am and unlike previous years around closing day (which I have never been to, but heard about), they were able to push plenty of snow so that no walking was required to ski down to the SuperQuad. However, we quickly discovered that you have to be careful not to go the wrong way, as ski patrol was preparing the mountain for the summer and had removed most of the ropes and closed signs. Most of the runs had moguls which was great for spring skiing. The trails with the best coverage were Tote Road, Skidder, Narrow Gauge, White Nitro, and Misery Whip. However, there were plenty of trails without consistent coverage which if anything made those trails more interesting. These included Hayburner, U. Competition Hill, the t-bar line, Spillway, and Gondola Line. I also did Sheer Boom under the SuperQuad which was the sketchiest run of the day. Just the SuperQuad and Skyline were running and let's just say that if you went down a King Pine trail you would have a long walk out.

We skied right until closing. I also got a video of my last run of the day. This will almost certainly be my last day of the season since I don't really have any time to go to Tuckerman's until June. Of course technically I could go, but probably won't. I would be surprised if anyone actually watches the entire video, but maybe you will want to watch sections of it:

Conditions: 70s in the valley, 40s up to; sunny in the morning, cloudy in the afternoon; minimal wind

Trip Report:

Finally scratched Hillman's Highway off the list.

The original plan was to ski the Gulf of Slides but after 20 minutes on the trail, something didn't feel right. I decided to listen to the voice in my head and turned around. Word in Pinkham Notch was that Hillman's and Left Gully were in very good shape so I decided to hit Hillman's.

I got to the base of Hillman's later than I wanted. TRT was snow covered more than halfway up. I was able to skin from HoJo's to Hillman's via the top part of the Sherburne. Hillman's had pretty good coverage -- except for the lower part where a brook had opened up right in the middle of the run. I climbed straight up, hugging the Christmas tree. I decided against getting to the ridge since it was getting late and clouds were moving in. I got around three-quarters of the way up and skied down in soft corn snow. The tricky part of the run was the brook that had opened up. To skiers right, the snow path was less than a ski length. Skiers' left was a little wider but covered in blue ice. I decided to hit the ice instead.

I headed up again. The bottom of Dodge's Drop still had good coverage so I hit that before calling it a day. There is a short portage over some rocks to get from Hillman's to the Sherburne.

The Sherburne is still skiable for about a third of the way down. However, there were numerous portages and, nearing the end, it was just thin ribbons of snow which barely concealed rocks. My guess is that they'll probably have to close the Sherb by the weekend.

Looking into Tux, it looks like there's a lot of good snow in there. Go for it!

We decided to hit up Jay Peak this weekend for some true Spring skiing! The forecast called for bluebird skies and temps around 70 degrees. As we arrived it looked very promising with many trails covered in the white stuff! We arrived around 10 and headed straight up on the Tram with the intention of heading down Vermonter. However everyone seem to have the same intention so we decided to head down Northway over to Goats Run then down River Quai and then Interstate. One of the first things we noticed after skiing Killington, was that the base, though soft, was not as water logged! Unfortunately Killington experienced a storm the night before we were there last weekend! Goats Run and River Quai actually skiied really well! Flatter trails seemed sluggish!

Our next run was down Vermonter with the goal to head back to the the Tramside for a beverage! Vermonter was bumping up due to traffic and made it fun to ski! The tough part was when beginner skiers panic in the middle of narrow sections? Which begs the question - If a sign says "This lift services Intermediate-Advanced to Expert trails only", why do beginners think it is safe to go any way?

Anyhow, we crossed over on the bottom of Montrealer, Angles Wiggle, Taxi (dirt patches) then down Queens Highway. Got the Tram Lodge, took gear off go to walk into the Tower Bar and "WHAT?" closed! We ended up hiking over to The Foundry where the Hotel is.

We always like the flatbreads there and the prices are good too! It was nice sitting on the deck with ski boots on and no winter gear! It was a t-shirt kind of day! After eating and a couple of beverages, we decided to go at it some more! So we headed over to Flyer!

Wwe then lapped that chair four times splitting time between Green Mountian Boys and River Quai paths down. GMB was nicely bumped out with plenty of space on the upper part and they tightened up on the lower and steeper section! They were soft and each run felt like a super fun work out! River Quai was not bumped out but it skied fairly fast for Spring conditions and my skies carved nicely down that run! My wife was wiped so she headed over to The Drink to order us some drinks (Ha sounds funny) while I opted to make one last full charging run down GMB and that was a blast! That drink hit the spot once I was back down! BTW my wife surprised me with a pair of ski boots that she picked up for 50% off at their ski shop!

We never made it over to the Jet side - always popular even with a slow chair! There appeared to be a line from a distance and you had to walk a stretch to get there so we skipped it!

It was a great REAL Spring Skiing day and the kids stayed home! We love Jay Peak and enjoy every trip there! Their rates were $55 for the day but we used the Ride and Ski card (2 fer based on full price) and skied for $34.50 - that worked!

Looking forward to some May skiing!

At first glance (River Quai and Interstate with Cam Am in the distance)

It was great that Cannon extended their season by a week and pushed out the closing to 4/14. But that day was one of the snowiest of the season and didn't have the spring feel we were looking for to cap the season. So we made our own....

Puttered around the house in the morning then headed over to Cannon to start climbing around 10am. Parked at Zoomer chair with the intention of Skinning Gary's (least steep). unfortunately coverage had diminished considerably since our recon on Saturday and Gary's no longer had connecting lines. So up Rocket instead...
P1010196.jpg

That is a tough way to start, especially under a relentless sun. But we kept a slow and steady pace finding good coverage and occasional shade breaks up the bottom of the Cannonball chair. We chose Upper Cannon for the last push. Coverage was edge to edge with perfect pitches for climbing. Up top there was plenty of room to spread out...

We were eventually joined at the tram top by another skinner. Then the sounds of the mountain started coming alive as other skiers popped up on the summit and Profile. Although Cannon had some issues with their snowmaking this season, the truth is that they cranked out a LOT. The fact that almost every trail on the mountain is still skiable while Lafayette has virtually no cover says a lot....

The down was fantastic. Nice corny turns, the way spring is supposed to be! On the way down we passed several groups heading up. It was great to see everyone out making the most of it. Although we had planned on coming down Paulie's, Zoomer was the only choice that offered an unbroken line. And what a line it was. Just about perfect...

It just doesn't get much better than sweet spring turns while people are fishing in the Lake below. If there had been a connecting line we might have ridden straight into the water....

That might have done it for our season. But you never know....

2 perfect days with sunday being a bit warmer with the snow softening earlier. same tack each day. a couple warmups on skye lark bittersweet before moving over to the east side where the sun first worked it's magic. run of the morning for us was the skye hawk, panic, vertigo combo. bumping perfection. middle o also had great though thinning bumps and a short walk out by late afternoon. afternoon was saying farewell to the canyon. double dipper had huge bumps though a couple thin areas. same for downdraft. by late afternoon gs bumps on east fall. the surprise was how well powerline skied. perfect corn bumps. about 3pm back over to supe area to hit more ovations, skye hawks, lower skye larks before finishing out with a "nature walk". as much as i love pow, days like these are my favorites.
