    Eclipse PSA

Yup, that was a prominence. That made it extra awesome, seeing a solar prominence with my bare eyes.

    Summer 2024 improvements

I'd expect permitting, design, planning etc. to take up to a year even after a deal is signed, so no surprise there.

    Eclipse PSA

I planned my trip to Sugarloaf with a friend for Sunday-Monday, mostly because I was also planning on bringing my younger kid, and didn't want to take him out of school for two days. He's decided not to go and it's definitely too late to change our reservations, so we're driving home Monday...

    Eclipse PSA

The real traffic clusterf*ck, at least as far as highways are concerned, is going to be the I-89/I-93 merge. As it is, that regularly backs up several miles past Concord on Sunday afternoons during ski season. Franconia Notch is also a potential bottleneck if you're coming down I-91 to I-93.

East coast Avalanche and Mountain dangers rare but real

It appears SL has renamed Spillway Crosscut to Skyline Drive, which is kind of cute (and reflects the new lift name). The avalanche happened in a little pocket between White Nitro and Upper Boomauger.

East coast Avalanche and Mountain dangers rare but real

This guy got caught in a slide between (I think) White Nitro and Upper Boomauger, below the crosscut: https://www.facebook.com/nsanborn/posts/pfbid02Sxu52mNJK8C9sYvh35QbmQeNa5Q226Y9AMQ1zo2ebg5WGLtecEtSxeNv4ce1RbMYl

Personal Backcountry and Mountain backpack carriable Lift system

A cordless drill doesn't have even remotely enough torque to pull someone up a slope.

Lift exit ramps are not at all equal. What is the worst you have experienced? Icy, Steep, Too tight?

Some detachable quads, I think mostly Garaventas, have the deceleration profile set up so the chair hits the unloading ramp at close to line speed and slows down abruptly. If you time it right it basically flings you off the lift.

Lift exit ramps are not at all equal. What is the worst you have experienced? Icy, Steep, Too tight?

The unload ramp on the old Peabody double at Cannon was the steepest I've ever seen, found it kind of scary as a kid.

Anyone planning on skiing during the eclipse?

Yes, but currently it's not a possibility for me to travel further afield to a more conducive weather zone. So if it's all cloudy everywhere in driving distance, at least we're skiing.

Anyone planning on skiing during the eclipse?

I booked a 2-day trip to Sugarloaf with a friend and my younger kid. On-mountain lodging was stupid expensive (more so than usual) and didn't allow checking in or out on Saturday, and every other place in the area that had online booking was sold out that weekend. But I called a place in...

EVs - New Hampshire gets it right

I don't have a lawn, but I was once doing some work for a friend and mowed his lawn, which was at least an acre and hadn't been mowed in a while, with his battery-powered mower, and it blasted right through everything and finished the job with electrons to spare. And this was 20 years ago.

EVs - New Hampshire gets it right

Even if your numbers are correct (and I'm pretty sure they're not, but I don't have time to do the research right now), you're ignoring the fact that EVs can take advantage of the transition to more renewable sources and ICE vehicles can't.

EVs - New Hampshire gets it right

The MPGe (miles per gallon equivalent) EPA mileage rating for electric cars is calculated "wall to wheel", so as to be comparable to the "tank to wheel" efficiency of ICE vehicles, and is the rated mileage per 33.7 kWh, the equivalent amount of energy in a gallon of gasoline. The reason MPGe...

    End of paper trail maps?

I don't think I've seen a topographic trail map since that 1982 Killington map. Which was and is awesome, although one issue with topos is that they make steep slopes look shorter than they are.
