Maximum one-day vertical at east coast ski area

These 60, 70k numbers are impressive, but the biggest "one day vertical" I've heard about is this: https://unofficialnetworks.com/2013/03/06/stowe-local-skis-100000-vertical-feet-day/ I think he was just lapping Hayride all day. The math is nuts. Fifty one runs in eight hours, so 480 / 51 =...

A Bad Week with Chairlifts and Kids

I routinely ski solo and periodically I get asked to help a kid's ski school class onto the lift (i.e., ride up with one to manage the bar, etc.) I've never said "no", but sitting beside them as they're perched at the edge of the chair gives me the heebie-jeebies to this day. I keep my eyes on...

    Good New England Bump Runs

Yeah, Stowe's Liftline has nice bumps down the 13 pitch (the final steep part). Skiers right side of the trail is rarely groomed, so it gets moguls of varying quality. The 13 pitch section is usually the best part. Far skiers left is rarely groomed out as well. National is getting moguls...

Times you've skied in sketch conditions

The icy day that I remember vividly was on New Year's Day at Bretton Woods one time. It had rained the night before so it was going to be "firm". At the time I had a season pass to Cannon which came with a couple vouchers to Bretton Woods. BW is a lot less steep so I figured it would be more...

    Stowe--Wknd Crowds

Stowe can get crowded on weekends... As said above, the Fourrunner starts at 7:30 and has a minimal wait until 10:00 or so. If it's really bad, they'll start spinning the Lookout Double (right next door). I've never seen the Lookout have a line; chair is slow, but the time-to-the-top is about...

    Snowmobiling locations?

Thanks for all the quick replies and advice, etc. I'll pass it on!

    Snowmobiling locations?

Maybe not skiing / boarding related, but it's still snow-related, so I'll give this a shot. Friends of mine located in Central Massachusetts want to try out snow-mobiling and asked me for recommendations of places to go that rent snow-mobiles, provide tours, etc. Any recommendations? This is...

    Stowe 12.9.16

One of the nice things about Saturday (besides the amazing conditions) was that you could tell the Stowe regulars from the occasional visitors. That wasn't even remotely cold. Maybe a tad chilly. No hair dryer required to pry the boots off, no hot chocolate breaks required.

    Ski Area Employment

Lots of good information in this thread so far. Many moons ago I taught for a season at Ski Roundtop in Pennsylvania. I enjoyed the work; when a student "got it", it was really fun. The free season's pass and other discounts were nice. The downside for me was that I was effectively working...

    Attitash - Peaks Customer Service

Before I reached this post, I honestly couldn't figure out what this thread was about. My interpretation of the original statement is probably biased somewhat from my profession as a software developer. In that realm, the word "or" has a very specific meaning. "result = A or B" means that...

    Worst Ski Season Ever?

Granted, the 11/12 winter probably ended faster than anything else courtesy of a week of 60-degree days, but at the beginning of that stretch, EpicSki had the New England Gathering at Stowe and MRG. The thread discussing that is pretty endless, but some of my pictures are here...

Aspen with skiNEwhere, Feb 4-6, 2016

Agreed. I've had the opportunity to visit a decent number of places "out West"... I could just keep going back to Aspen each year. Whatever you're looking for, they have... and they have a lot of it. I've been to Aspen four or five times now... I don't think I've *ever* waited in a lift...

    "Whales" or "wales"?

Wikipedia is your friend: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autumn The alternative word fall for the season traces its origins to old Germanic languages. The exact derivation is unclear, with the Old English fiæll or feallan and the Old Norse fall all being possible candidates. However, these...

    Worst Trail Names

What's wrong with "Tippecanoe"? Where is it? FYI, "Tippecanoe" is not pronounced like "tippy canoe", it's pronounced like "tip a canoe". At least that's how my history teacher pronounced it.
