Synthetics every time. I'f go for something that wicks away the moisture from the inside out. The thought of wearing cotton just gives me the chills.

I've always used a Petzl headlamp and still have my trusty original from years ago, which uses 4 AA batteries! These days though, the technology is a lot more advanced, in terms of battery life, weight and efficiency.

Although not exactly a recipe as such, my favourite snail track has got to be Indian style 'bhuja mix'. Mixed with a few handfuls of dried fruits and some extra nuts to bulk it out, it's a winner every time.

Only a hip flask with whiskey or brandy, for those cold nights after a rewarding jaunt.
