Summer Skiing at Snowbird, UT: 6/26/11

Welcome to UT Just saw this TR from June and your comment about the last day at the Bird. There are additional pictures of the last day posted by Admin at FTO in this post: http://firsttracksonline.com/boards/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=9724 I haven't visited over here in some time and was not...

    Skier Responsiblity Code

I occasionally ski with a guy I call a "mountain lawyer" (you know..like a jailhouse lawyer). Yesterday I did a couple of runs with him at Alta. We were moving fairly rapidly down a nearly empty and wide "groomer" (a loosely defined term for Alta) and he was about 50 yds ahead of me making...

    Snowbasin 2-21-2011

It is not uncommon for first-time visitors to run back to the bathrooms with a camera to take a picture.

    Snowbasin 2-21-2011

Snowbasin is a beautiful place, both in terms of terrain and facilities. However, it is a good idea for skiers used to skiing in the east to avoid it during stormy weather. Some of the open areas can be very tough to ski when visibility is poor. Of course, right after a storm it is a blast...

    Alta 1/31/11

Hooked up with Kingslug today at Alta. Ira was just coming off a grueling three day Avi Course so he was dogging it a bit. That was fine with me since I have only skied 8 days this season since returning from two months on the east coast to spend time with my daughter and my new grandson. I...

Why would you not move out West?

Actually, the last one is not a joke. Since moving to UT and living at 4,800' my wife has basically given up baking all but the most simple things. For anyone interested there is a book called "Pie In The Sky" that provides advice for adjusting baking techniques to higher altitudes. I...

    The Older I Get...

Attaboy Ira! I'll be back at Alta after Jan 12. When it dumps you can come out west to help me "rehabilitate" my 64 yo heart with the new set of valves I had installed two months ago. There sure is some pathetic whining about the cold from some of the "aged" guys on this board. I guess they...

TR some fresh stuff and a killer lunch!

I am just finishing my third season here in the Wasatch. The prior two winters were epic. While the present season has been substantially less so, it has definitely perked up in the last few days. Kingslug and I have been enjoying all that white stuff for the past couple of days in beautiful...

    snowbird - 1/28-1/31

Sorry I couldn't work it out to meet you at the Bird. From your pictures and TR I can see you had a great experience. Glad it worked out for you. After a few trips to UT years ago, I knew I wanted to spend my winters there. I kiss the wife each morning, and tell her: "I'll be at the office."

    Colorado!!!!!!!!!!

Can't address the snow issue, but I don't think it is worth hauling your skis west. Some of the airlines are charging extra for skis. Rent for the conditions.

How late is too late for out west?

Actually Ira, you missed the best. It started snowing about Mar 3rd and by the closing day party on April 15th at Wildcat Base (I can send you some pictures) we had picked up 260 inches. March into April was epic!

Things Not Accomplished In Season 08-09

I didn't get to 100 days. I spent too much time "out of town" on trips to San Francisco, San Diego, and New York City. I only made 87 days. Sighhhhh.

    2008-09 Ski Season Breakdown Thread

I am at 87 days. Snowbird is still open so I am hoping to add a few more. I will be out of town for around 5 - 7 days, but I should still be able to grab a couple more when I get back to UT.

    Safety Less Speed vs Helmets

I'm not pissed off, but I am amazed at your comment. This is the kind of drivel that I have heard regarding safety issues for decades. I heard similar crap for many years from people justifying not wearing seat belts while driving or riding in cars. I have heard similar stupidity from...
