After a great ski day at Killington on Friday we looked for an encore. Kaaterskill Falls is a short 1 mile hike right of 23A near Hunter. There is a lot of exposure if you want to be daring and every year several people are carted out of here. We had a group of 15. Only 4 of us went all the way to the top.
Kaaterskill Falls is the highest two-tiered waterfall in New York state. The water drops 260 feet in two stages. The first drop is 180 feet while the second is only 80 feet.

I've both climbed down and hiked up.

Love the trail behind the bottom of the first waterfall

I read up on the geology. It is a relatively young feature. Only 130k years old. The stream used to flow to the west and the Schoharie until it eroded a new path and found its existing course. They call it steam capture.
