Platty can open with a remarkably small base. The trails are extremely well maintained for that reason.

Hiked Sunapee yesterday. There are alot of trails mowed all ready there. They will need a second cut if we get rain.

This is true, I skied there the last week of February last year, they received six inches, there was zero base on Freefall and Plunge, they were both roped off, so many people were ducking the ropes, they finally dropped them. They both had very thick grass beneath and skied great. I never felt any scrapping, and had no new gouges on my bases.

If Greek Peak is not able to open this year, I'm considering making Platty my home hill. I was able to purchase lift tickets online for $18.75 last year. If I'm able to do the same this year, I may just buy 20 tickets for under $400. It is a bit of a haul, 100 miles one way, but I do love the place.

I dunno why but it never occurred to me that the cleaner the slope the less snow needed to open. It's so obvious.

That begs the question, what mountains have the "smoothest" slopes?

Platty is great but in my opinion their season pass price is kind of high and they always have ways to get reduced tickets on the web.

The "What the ****K?" mentality of Plattekill is one of my favorite things about the place. It's a real skiers' mountain, devoid of the legal and regulatory nonsense you encounter at the mega-hills.

It's 175 miles and about 3 hours each way from Central New Jersey, and I ski there a fair bit! When I have kids someday this is where I'd want them to learn, God willing it will still be open. I'd more than gladly pony up the extra $$$ on motels and B&Bs to have them learn there than in the Poconos. It's also nice that the future Mrs is a n.Vermonter for the "free" winter lodging near Jay/Smuggs.

Is their terrain as challenging as the trail map leads on? It looks like a pretty cool hill.
