Wow. That mountain has to deal with a lot of avalanche control on a yearly basis. But damn that is an old school double!

I read that. I don't know anything about avy control from a ski patrol perspective, but a 40 lb explosive seems like a little too much boom! I wonder if they used smaller explosives without success.

Of course hindsight is 20/20

It's not that bad depending on the size of the area. I'm guessing they probably use a recoiless rifle and to be at 40 lbs that's about 3 shells. I think they just underestimated the snowpack and where the fracture line would be.

Key words, "no injuries". A lucky shot and the sacrifice of one old double probably saved the lives of a lot of skiers.

I just saw a youtube video that was uploaded 4 days ago from Crystal Mountain that showed avi work being done that triggered a massive slide that ended up being bigger than they thought. They had to close the road after it slid far enough to block traffic. Which ever happened first you would have thought they learned their lesson.
