First time to Aspen for me and the GF. We were going to hit the Summit County places but this is a spring break period and we were alarmed by how quickly the lodging in that area was getting reserved. So we went to Aspen.

First impressions are very good. Staying in town walking distance to some places to eat/drink. Planning on a live show or two this week.

Snowmass today. Full on sun and 40-ish temps. Snow was amazing.

A blue trail called Long Shot on far skiers right is groomed only 3 times a year or so according to Guest Services. Today was one of the days so they groomed in the morning and dropped the rope at noon. So people hiked up.

And this is what we saw.

There were acres of ungroomed and quick tree shots and you could dive back on the groomed trail which goes on for several miles. It was an awesome day.

I'll update this TR as I go.

If you don't hike Highland Bowl while you're out there, I'm not sure we can still be friends.

I am scared but I will consider it. I was planning on Snowmass and Ajax but I am flexible.

Listen to Deadhead, it's mandatory. Bring some medicine from the shop to calm your nerves

It's cool to check out Ajax and Snowmass if you've never been to the area, but IMO Highlands is the best of the three areas and not just because of expert terrain. It has some exceptional cruising terrain as well that the GF could handle just fine I'm sure.

The cool thing about Highland Bowl is you don't necessarily have to "go big". Even if you just took the Snowcat ride out to the edge of the hike, you can ski some fairly low angle stuff that brings you right back to the Deep Temerity lift. GF could hang at the Cloud 9 Bistro while you check it out. You'll be able to see right along the whole ridge in front of you what you'd get yourself into if you go further on up.

I'm watching a Talking Heads cover band at the Belly Up. It's so cool.

They were called This Must Be the Band. Great show and the Belly Up is an excellent venue.

Just another day of stupidly perfect spring skiing. Bumps were everywhere. Dived in and out of trees all day. I've been skiing mostly blues and the snow is so awesome I'm not feeling the pull to the more extreme stuff. This is Snowmass, btw.

At the end of the day I wandered into this gully trail. Long and fun and bump loaded.

The lady is taking tomorrow off so I've gotta check out Ajax or Highlands. Play it by ear.

Had a short morning session at Aspen Mountain today. Overcast...light was flat as could be and the morning started crusty. It started to get softer down low but I just didn't have it in me to charge today.

It's a small ski area by western standards but certainly skis big. Very mellow there compared to Snowmass and I can walk to it from the hotel. Speaking of the town, here's a couple of pics.

The town is great. Too many bars and eateries to try in a week. The service is excellent and people are very friendly. Certainly glad I came here and will return.

looks great, enjoy!

these are the kind of trees I want to ski. More trail with trees, less wood. Soft snow. Does this sort of trails exist in the East?

I really didn't want to post that but it felt dishonest holding it back.
