Assos LL.fugu Bib Tights

BKVOL.jpg

Not many cyclists are willing to brave the range of temperatures that Assos designed the LL.fugu Bib Tights for, but from 42 all the way down to 21 degrees Fahrenheit, you can at least count on your legs staying warm. These are Assos' most technologically-advanced bib tights to date. They look like a Farmer John wetsuit, and they'll make you fast friends with winter's worst conditions while your riding buddies are all stuck inside on the trainer.
As usual, Assos marshals a host of fabrics designed to keep you warm and comfortable while preserving an unobtrusive fit. The torso is a mix of RXQ fabric for warmth (the white stuff) and Lycra (the black stuff). RXQ is a four-way stretch fabric whose 3D air channels mimic materials like Merino wool to create pockets of trapped air with minimal volume. This trapped air acts as an insulating layer that keeps you warm well beyond what you'd expect from such a low-volume layer. The full cut of the bib part makes it equivalent to a short-sleeve base layer, so it curtails the need for a thermal layer under your jacket except for in the most wintery conditions.
Assos has also placed a windproof panel of strataGonUltra airBlock insert over the crotch. More than a fig leaf, it keeps the cold winds from cooling you down there. We've found that it directly adds comfort, and Assos claims that it reduces the need for repeated mid-ride bladder evacuations. This protection doesn't come at the cost of breathability, though; strataGonUltra is a variably permeable membrance that allows sweat vapor to escape when warm but battens down the hatches during winter's worst salvos.
The legs are kept warm by Assos' TwinDeck system. They use strataGonMedium airBlock on the outside, with a low-volume, free-moving next-to-skin layer. Medium strataGon is thinner, stretchier, and more flexible than the Ultra, making it right for shaping around legs and knees. The legs are pre-shaped to make sure the fit is Assos close. A thinner panel joins the left and right side, which makes for a more accommodating lateral stretch and a touch more ventilation. The strataGonMedium extends down the legs to about three inches from the top of the stirrup covering the front and outside of each leg, while a thinner, stretchier, less windproof material runs down the inner thigh for a perfect fit and to allow some venting.
And finally, this is Assos, so you know fit is ultimately number one. With its Advanced Ergonomic Panel Design (AEPD), the LL.fugu Bib Tights should feel as if you're too tall for them while you're standing. Lean forward and grab some imaginary handlebars, though, and everything should feel just right. Since these tights are chamois-free, you also get to enjoy the comfort of your favorite summertime chamois. No more dish rag-feeling inserts for winter riding. The two-way zipper is one final Assos touch; since it works both ways, you won't need to completely undress when heeding the call of nature.
The Assos LL.fugu Bib Tights are available in six sizes ranging from Small to TIR (like X-Large but wider) in the color Black Volkanga.
