Anyone know if it cost extra to bring skis on a plane since they are so long?

AFAIK you're allowed to bring one pair with no extra charges. The specific rules vary from carrier to carrier though, so you'll have to check it out with them. We recently had a thread on this subject. Check it out and continue the discussion there:
