Mike, I truly enjoy reading your reports. Owl's Head gets a lot of critics and I'll admit I was one at first. But over time, it's one of the more memorable hikes that I have done. Someday I'll fly a flag from that peak. One feature that many people forget is the "true" Owls head. Looking upwards from Lincoln brook up that spire is a really hidden gem of the Pemi !

I *so* want that spire. Even more, I want to sit atop that cliff. That other slide looked climbable, too. Next summer ... next summer ...

Dammmed let me know when you want to tackle that spire. I'm interested. Did you notice the slide that seems to fall right into the brook on the western side of the spire? That looks like it would be a good ascent route, but it would also be cool to first hit the main summit then travel across the ridge to the spire. If not the Arrow slide then the true "owl's Head" next year.

Count me in for the Spire!

If Steve Smith didn't like the Arrow Slide and left it for the woods, I believe I would not like it either.

Hope you readers got to hike this weekend.

Home from Cabot, and my knees are killing me after sitting in the car for 186 miles. Trip report and pics coming Monday sometime. Good thing I noticed on Rte 3 when the camera went flying off the roof of the car.

Did you notice anything odd carved into the side of the Owl's head sign?

  7. #17
No - I didn't try to look at the sides of the sign.

    Dare I ask?

My last trip to OH last fall revealed only 4 huge nails pounded deeply into the summit tree to keep the sign from being taken and whittleling on the sign that reads, "Owl's Head." Something change, maybe. Rumors?!

Ok, I'll bite! And I'm certain we are all interested. What else did you notice or have heard?!

When I did it last I noticed that the word MUTUMBO was carved into the side of the sign. The lettering was same size as the lettering for OWLS HEAD and I just wondered if anyone else knew what it meant. Mike, How easy do you think it would be to get a flagpole through the trees near the summit area?

  10. #20
Only think that comes to mind is the Mutumbo that is a 7'2" tall pro basketball player.

Flagpole through the trees? Hmm. Some of those trees are *tall*. Look at the picture with me in it for perspective. However, the trees seemed very climbable, and in fact if you go off the summit just a hundred feet the trees thin out and a flag would be visible to the outside world.
