Resort or Ski Area: Hunter Mountain

Conditions: Several inches of natural snow plus several inches of machine-made on top of a base of ice (at least for ungroomed trails).

Trip Report: Great day at Hunter. Tons of people, obviously, but the vast majority of them were either in the irrationally long line for the HSQ or the lodge/bar. Conditions weren't as good as I'd hoped, given the 6+ inches of new snow reported, but there was plenty of good skiing to be had. Early in the morning was great before the crowds started scraping off the natural, and things softened up nicely in the warmth of the late afternoon. Midday--with peak crowds--was the iffiest.

Clare's was well-bumped top-to-bottom, but with some icy batches breaking up the flow, especially in the bottleneck areas. Minya and Cliff weren't as bumped up, but they were still plenty of fun. Huega may have been my favorite run of the day, especially in the late afternoon as its sun-exposed face allowed it to soften up more than other runs.

All things considered...great last-minute day trip.
