Total Distance: 7.6 miles

Difficulty: Moderate

Conditions: Dry, sunny, windy, and very clear with 70-mile visibility!

Special Required Equipment: jacket (camera optional)

Trip Report:
Sky, Ghostdog and I met at the parking lot at 8:30 AM. Crossing plenty of bog bridges (puncheons) to walk above the wet areas during the first quarter mile, this hike immediately became a lot of fun with several interesting large rock formations on the trail called a glacier erratic.

There are three outstanding viewpoints throughout the trail. For the best views, the perfect time of year would be during the fall foliage, or in winter when there are no leaves on the trees.

For hikers with experience in elevation gain, this mountain hike will be enjoyable. From the East Osceola (4156’) summit, it is not far or difficult to reach Mt. Osceola, named after the great Chief of the Seminole Nation.

One descends several hundred feet before climbing up the steep stone and steps until you reach the top. It’s only less than one hour to reach the 4,340’ pinnacle, which still shows the location of the former fire tower.

Hikers should realize that the trail between East Osceola and Mt Osceola is somewhat steep, rough, and has slides. Sky and Ghostdog made it look effortless when we reached a great 20-foot cliff called “the chimney” that was the best climb of the hike!

The views from the top were better than spectacular. How immense Waterville Valley is expanding and replacing the wilderness. Beautiful 180-degree pristine views of Mts. Tecumseh, Squam Lakes, the Tripyramids, the Presi’s and beyond to the Mahoosuc’s in Maine made each step worth the effort on this exceptionally clear day!
