ABC Sticks with "Desperate House Wives" Instead of Launching Controversial Show

Now what would you have thought of this show which would have pitted people of different walks of life with each other? :argue:

Would have been interesting I think...

Me too...a show that would have annoyed special interest groups at both ends of the political spectrum. Too far ahead of its' time.

Before ABC announced its decision, the Family Research Council said it was worried evangelicals would be made to appear judgmental and foolish.

Can't really blame them for calling 'em as they see 'em, though, can they?

Not that I disagree, but since you've provided one end of the polar spectrum, how about this comment?:

"Regardless of how things turn out at the end of the last show, it's dangerous to let intolerance and bigotry go unchallenged for weeks at a time," he said, adding that GLAAD hopes a revised version might air.

This country has had a history for over 2 centuries of bigotry and intolerance, until recently never challenged much at all. Why is it suddenly important that it not go unchallenged for a few weeks in this instance?

I see GLAAD's point, there (and yours, too, JimG), but on occasion I feel it's necessary to lump GLAAD and many other reform/protest groups in the "Evangelical" bucket. You don't have to be religious to evangelise, I think.

On teh 2 centuries of bigotry and intolerance- that's why the Puritans got booted out of every European country they tried to settle in (11, I think) before finally getting booted to the New World. And boy, aren't we all glad they did? Such a wonderful, caring and open legacy they left...

You can't blame them for exposing people as frauds and hypocritics and whatnot, and it seems like the overall intention (as given by their PR and Marketing Depts.) seems well enough. However, these sorts of shows are based on the premise of finding the most outlandish people they can. That's what makes it 'good' television. They can't show Christians who are actually following Christ, b/c that's not good television; they can't show rural people who are intelligent and well-spoken for the same reason.
I had the misfortune of seeing "I Want to be a Hilton," and the cast of characters was pretty predictable. Anybody with average savviness could survive that show, but of course they pick a group of heinously awkward folks who have no business living the lifestyle of the rich and famous.
Reality shows might be 'real,' as far as being unscripted, but they always have an agenda and are very selective in what they portray (and usually take full advantage of any poor sap who agrees to go on the show).
Glad to see ABC has such pains of moral conscience that they've decided to keep "Desperate Housewives" on the air.

Aside from the great alpine content, folks like ctenidae and blacknblue (and everyone else for that matter) really make me appreciate this site.

You guys are OK!

There I go again... I tend to use the word "ski" to cover all alpine disciplines...

Bad habit I guess...

Looks like it would be better suited on HBO or Showtime ...... maybe NBC should give it to their sister station Bravo.

Yes. We had to postpone the trip until the 23rd of July. My wife's cousin is going into Oslo to receive fertility treatment. It seems that the Norwegian Government doesn't think that there are enough children in the country so they are covering all but about $100 dollars of costs of the procedure for anyone interested. Socialism at it's best!

I'll be sure to post while I'm away, though.
