Date Hiked: 9 -11 - 03
Trails Hiked: Franconia Bike Path, Liberty Springs, Franconia Ridge
Total Distance: 8.0 miles
Difficulty: Moderate
Conditions: Priceless!
Special Required Equipment: sunscreen, A sense of Patriotism!
Trip Report:
Ghostdog and I spent a delightful afternoon on Liberty (4459’) to fly our flag on the summit. This was our second hike to this summit on 9-11, the anniversary of the terrorist attacks. The warm, sunny weather was a joy after last year’s pouring rain on this date. The 360-degree views are always spectacular, when the weather cooperates.
“Tinman”, the Liberty tentsite caretaker and I were talking when two hikers passed the platforms. This second hiker, except for his boots trekked by naked. Yes, completely nude. He had no pack as he had little to carry!
We met more hikers after 5 PM than we saw all day. In four separate groups, nine hikers who are nearing the end of their 2160-mile quest on the Appalachian Trail asked if there was space left at the tentsite. Even these hikers asked, “Did you see the naked guy? What’s up with that?”
The event "Flags on the 48" is Saturday, where flags are flown on peaks above 4000’. You are certainly most welcome to join in.
