Well the title doesn't cover all my questions but hopefully will attract those who know VT and NH well enough to help out.

The Background: I plan on making my triumphant comeback from this shoulder injury this Wed at Okemo. The two other couples coming up can only make it a day trip but, being that I'm off for the whole week and really jonesing to ski I wan't to ski until Sat or Sun.

The Problem:(aka: My wife and her pocket full of monkey wrenches): I tell my wife of the plans to go to Okemo with everyone .... cool. I then mention that I wan't to meet some other friends at an underminded resort for the rest of the week .... umm no. She's not into skiing 4 - 5 days in a row.

My proposal: We ski Okemo on Wed. Head up to N. Conway that night. Thurs we do some shopping and paint the town red. (I'm assuming that we'll start this in the afternoon which will give me some time to ski Attitash in the AM for a few hours if she wants to sleep in ) We'll then move on to said undetermined resort on Thurs night/Fri Morning to meet up with the other crowd. (Not a bad idea .... right? ... Ladies of AZ input?)

Anyhoo Here are some of my questions:

1) Best way to make it from Ludlow to N. Conway
2) How long?
3) Any other suggestions as to what non skiing things we can do?
4) Are there better outlet malls in NH? (I say NH because of sales tax)
5) Help?

I'm open to ANY suggestions. I just want us both to be happy.....whatever we do, we'll do together. I'm not having her drop me off to ski for a day while she tries to have fun alone in a town she doesn't know.

Come on AZers let me have it!

man, you are driving from NYC to okemo to north conway to ski attitash? why don't you stay in burlington and ski some place in the northern greens that has good snow like jay, stowe, smuggs, bush, or mad river? i am gonna go out on the limb and guess you are looking for an ASC area? just seems like such a waste to do all that driving just for attitash when you are so much closer to better snow and better resorts. burlington is heck of a lot nicer place than north conway too with decent shopping options (no outlets like north conway though). wouldn't be much of an issue i guess, but i can't think of an easy way to get from okemo to north conway.

I think the fastest way to get to N. Conway from Ludlow would be to go Rt 100 north>Rt 4 east>I91>Fairlee>Rt 25A>Plymouth>I93>Lincoln>Rt 112>N Conway. Disclaimer: if it's snowing driving the infamous Kancamagus Hwy might not be a good idea.

This is kind of a tough one. I am sure there will be other suggestions. I am familiar with these roads but never went from Ludlow to N. Conway in one shot.

If you like meat and beer the Moat Mountain Pub and Restaurant in N. Conway is great.

When I was typing up this question to AZ, I was hoping to get your (along with our current hopeless romantic, TB ;) )input, Steve, Thanks for reading! Well yeah. The ASC gold pass was part of the equation, but I'm not married to the idea. (You win for that guess!) Nor am married to the idea of skiing for that day. Go ahead, talk me into Burlington. Any recommendation as to what we can do or stay? I appreciate your help.

Edit: Looks like the majority of My fellow NYkers will end up in Southern Vermont for the meetup. Probably Snow. Driving back south doesn't bother me though.

Yikes, sounds like it's not worth it. I do like meat and beer. I will keep Moat Mountain in mind when I'm up there. I was just talking to BobR on Friday (he came to NYC and we met up for a concert) and was telling him that this NY Italian here was impressed with Bellinis in N. Conway if anyone is looking for good Italian grub.

$38 bucks they wouldn't have if you skied for free on your pass. regarding burlington, i am only now just starting to explore the area. church street has some fantastic dining options from the looks of it. there is a theater with independant type movies downtown near church (regular movies up the street on the north side, iirc) and a mall with a parking garage also within a quick walk of church. free parking for the first two hours with a $10 max for the day, wow! i am a specialist at free parking but hey, it caught my eye. there is another mall off the interesting of 2 and 89. lots of interesting shops downtown, i really don't have any specific recommendations as i haven't been over there enough. i think it might be enough to keep the non-skier happy. great view of the lake and the 'dacks as well.

SRO's directions look to be on point. a lot of back road driving, those highway sections are very short. normally i don't mind long drives and back roads, but i just can't see it for attitash. i am pretty biased against attitash though, so don't let my opinion stop you if you like the area ;)

Great directions to 91 North. Try staying on 91 to the exit for 302 and follow it to N.Conway...it meets up with either 16 or 16A (actually goes right through N.Conway)

Don't forget that you also have Black Mt. and WildCat right up there.

302 goes to littleton on i93 a slowly winds around until hitting 3 and into crawford notch. i think that route might be a lot longer because you drive further north east just to turn back and drive south west whereas 25 to plymouth puts you in line for a straight shot. but if you were to try that route, you would want to jump on 93 south and pick up 302 at the next exit to avoid driving through some town centers. way too many stop lights.

Burlington...yeah baby!

My wife and I love Burlington. Lots of great restaurants, music and the new Majestic Movie Theater. It would not be too much out of your way to cruise down to Manchester and satisfy the outlet thing on the way up to Burlington from Ludlow.

I've sort of half read the thread, but if 25 intersects with 91, that might be your best bet. Follow it all the way into Ossipee and hang a left the Yankee Smokehouse (if you can resist the smell of BBQ). I drove once from Killington (I admit I'm not familiar with town names in VT) to Jackson, NH. We went 4 to 91 to 302 to 16, if I remember correctly.

to address a couple of other points I picked up on in some responses:

- 302 meets with 16. 16A is a loop off of 16.
- Bellini's is good for North Conway. Honestly, I wasn't impressed, especially for the typical wait. If you want Italian, it's the best place in the Valley. Me, I'll wait and go into the North End, but if you don't have that luxury, Bellini's will suffice.
- last time I was up, Black had next to nothing for snow. Go to Attitash or Wildcat.
- Moat is great BBQ and great micro brews
- avoid the Kang if possible. I just can't see how the conditions are any good this time of year.

if you want more suggestions, drop me a PM on Tuesday. I have a place in Intervale (16A) and am up there almost every week. I know the area very well, except for how to get there from VT. I leave for Tahoe on Wednesday, so Tuesday is your only chance to get some answers, unless Terry or Molecan jump in on this.

If you want to night ski, Shawnee Peak is open till 9 each night with the most night skiing in new england. They have been making snow all week so the conditions are pretty good. Tickets are $22 from 4 till closing. Drop me a PM if you are interested as I am there most any night! I don't do the bars and restaraunts much so don't have any good suggestions. I just go for home cooking. PS Shawnee is 20-25 minutes from North Conway. I hope you have fun!

I'm with River

I'm with Steve - don't drive all the way to North Conway when you have much better (IMO) skiing options a lot closer.
As Steve said, Burlington is great. You have your choice of Bolton Valley, Smuggs, Stowe, Mad River, and Sugarbush within an hour. Jay about 1.5 hours. You can buy discount Sugarbush tickets at the Alpine Shop in S. Burlington and at Hannaford Supermarkets (quite a few around the area).
Burlington has great shopping downtown. As mentioned above, Church Street Marketplace is great with a mixture of local and national shops and the attached Burlington Square Mall has your typical malls stores. Many, many restaurants to choose from. My favorites are A Single Pebble, American Flatbread, Vermont PUb & Brewery, and the Rusty Scuffer.
If you have any specific questions let me know as I live in the area.

Good deal guys! Thanks so much. My wife woke up with a nasty chest cold this morning so I'm not sure what's going to happen now. I'll follow up and let you know.

Well ... the wife was sick yesterday, so I made a day trip with some friends to Okemo. I'm back in NY and leaving we're both leaving for MS in a few minutes. Your ideas didn't fall on deaf ears though. Steve, especially, We're going to check out Burlington one of these days. It sounds great! Sorry about the false alarm guys. :( Thanks for all your help.
