Broadway Holds Drive for Sick 'Lion King' Star
NEW YORK (AP/ 1010 WINS) -- The cast and crew of Broadway's "The Lion King'' have come together for a bone marrow donor registration drive for an 11-year-old actress in the show.
Shannon Tavarez should've been singing in her starring role as Nala but lay curled on a hospital bed April 21 as her spine was injected with chemotherapy. Earlier that day her doctor had first said, "leukemia.''
Kathleen Maloney Reports
Shannon needs a bone marrow transplant but hasn't found the perfect match. Her search is daunting because her mother is black and her father is Hispanic. There aren't as many minorities and people of mixed ancestry registered as potential donors.
Broadway stars from "Wicked'' and other shows are attending donor registration drive at the Minskoff Theater to let people know getting on the donor registry involves just a cheek swab. The drive will continue through 3 p.m. Friday.
