Awesome trip- 2 days in Dublin (crowded, busy, lots of tourists, even in October. Worth a visit, though), then drove to Sligo, with the intention of spending a couple of days only, then heading south to Galway and Cork. Did a 4 hour horseback ride on Monday, and decided we could stay in teh area, so we did. Did a day trip north from Sligo to Donegal (very small town, nice town center (the Diamond), but tiny. Castle was closed, first 3 pubs didn't have Bulmers), a day trip south to look at castles (Ballymote, Ballinafad, Moygara), and spent a day climbing Knocknarea.

Sligo's great- very friendly people, if you're there, I recommend stoppingin to see Michael Quirk in his wood shop on Wine Street. He's a talker, be prepared to hang out a bit. Apparently the town gets very busy in the summer, but in October the weather's still great, and there aren't any tourists (except us).

All in all, A+ week.

Nice, did a trip last year with the wife. Our Fiat Punto wasn't nearly as nice as your rental ;) Did more of a Dublin west (not Northern Ireland) and down the coast to Shannon trip. Great people and beautiful country. Easy to drive (and people actually know how to drive there!) and get around, wiht the exception of occasionally meeting giant semis on tiny roads. A couple days in Dublin, visted the wife's ancestorial town (just south of Sligo), Achill, and the usual tourist stuff along the way. Pricey for Americans though.

Pretty sure all the pub we saw had Bulmers, must be a northern thing ;)

I was amazed at how polite and predictable IRish drivers are. Amazing. Much better than driving in Italy, where you get passed by 1974 Puntos doing 100 km/h on foggy, twisty, mountain roads in teh dead of night.

Most all the pubs had Bulmers, it was only in Donegal that they didn't have it on tap. Kind of odd. Maybe the Bulmers distributor ran over someone's sheep and is n't welcome there any more.
