We hit the jackpot. It had been snowing steadily for the past few weeks, sometimes a little and sometimes a lot. There was nothing resembling a hard base, as it was powder on powder. Nothing waist-deep, just soft snow everywhere. Fresh powder each day, often finding expanses of untracked snow late in the day. These low-traffic ski areas are pretty awesome that way.

I can't believe so many skiers have not ever heard of these places. This is probably why we had such great skiing without competition for untracked snow like there is in Utah.

If you want an alternative from the big resorts, lift lines, crowds, I recommend going to interior British Columbia. Red and Whitewater are definitely gems, but there are a few dozen other gems hidden in those mountains as well, and are worth the extra effort to get to. There is also a plethora of cat ski operations to choose from. We went with Big Red Cats and they were very professional and showed us a safe and great time in the backcountry.
