Bradford 2/3/2010

Chaperoned my kids' school ski program at our local 248' vert behemoth, Bradford in NE Mass. First I should note that nobody fell off a chair, got impaled by a ski pole or otherwise required hospitalization, so from a chaperoning perspective the day was a smashing success. I was impressed by the quality of the skiing surface considering the last precip of any note here was that monsoon a week and a half ago - Bradford groomers simply pulverize the loose granular back into a packed-powder corduroy. In all, a fun 2.5 hours for a real nice price (free).

One highlight was hitting Hugh's Run, newly cut for this season, for the first time. This is at skier's far left on the hill. Because it has not only as steep a pitch as any trail there but an actual curve in it, it's a little different from the other Bradford trails . It also has skiable low-angle woods on skier's right - well, skiable when there's snow; cover from manmade blow-in was bulletproof today. I suspect lines can be hit off skier's left too. A good addition to the Bradford trail map. Currently not lit for night skiing and also closed when there's race training on the adjoining trail.

Hugh's Run

The other highlight had to do with more woods. I'm not exactly sure of the status so I'll leave it at this:

Meanwhile, rumor has it Bradford may cut yet another new trail, to skier's left of Hugh's Run. If it were me I'd simply prune the woods in that area as it would make a decent glade, though I'm sure snowmaking is a consideration. (Did I read somewhere that Pat's Peak blows snow in some glades?)

Holy crap, they really cleared that thing out out! Wow! With tower guns? Damn. I was envisioning that sucked being just slightly wider than the existing T-bar line which would have been one helluva run.

looks like a neat little place. checked the trail map and many of the trails are listed as "black" at the top and gotta love the "glades". some seeded bumps and they'll have it all going on. impressive for a 250' hill.
